Sounds easy enough (for hubby anyway)

Hey...do you think a mini-fridge (that doesn't work so well) would work for an incubator? Same basic concept as the wine cooler right?

It should work fine but won't have a glass front like the wine coolers do ... OH I forgot to mention with the wine cooler that you do need to drill some ventilation holes in it ... we drilled 12 small holes in the top of ours and covered with screen.

From an engineering point of view it would work. You'd prolly want a window in the front, You could use heat tape inside and a fan to keep a consistant temp.

I saw quite a few cheap wine coolers on craigslist. Can't believe I actually started looking at them.

I have just enough room for the 8 that I have and certainly don't need more.

But it's so fun hatching chicks

It has taken a while for our son to realize that, no, we can't keep them except for a rare occurrence. Someday when we get an acre, we will keep some, but still obviously not all!

I didn't fridge tke Kefir - can I still strain it (It's a week old now) and restart it?

I do, it's all good. But the longer it's out the more sour it becomes and if it's active and unfed for too long it'll get unhappy. What I do Mikey is strain, add milk and put on counter for one day. That afternoon it is usually showing signs of separation. That's my clue to stick it in the fridge. Then it gets thick and yummy and effervescent and I strain it again. A new batch may take longer out of the fridge, my are very active and overgrown. While it's out I upended the jar and rotate gently to mix.

After it's thick it's ready if you like. No actual need to fridge it and let is get fizzy, I just like it best that way. Some ppl let it get to the separation stage, fish out the grains and drain in cheesecloth. Kefir cheese spread. You can drink the whey, use it to activate brined pickles or make kefir kraut, feed it to your dogs or the compost heap (no! What a waste!).

Here's the post on sprouting seeds .

Now that I found it, I need to print. lol...

Thanks much! Now I have to find a store that has the seeds down here in No-Mans-Land. I am trying to get set up to hatch some chicks out, so I need to figure all this out. Thanks for your help Critter & Tracydr

This is a link at the home page of BYc that has links to homemade incubators and several are out of fridges

Awesome - I can handle that BUT...from a non-engineering standpoint - what is heat tape?

Heat tape is like a tiny heating pad, commonly used for reptiles. Here's a link to some I was looking into for chicks and my geckos.

Yeah I see them all the time in the PHX craigslist - but I will have a very hard time justifying (to my chicken enabling hubby) a 7 hour round trip to get a free wine cooler to make an incubator to hatch more chicks that I really don't NEED.

I have a mini-frig on hand that I can hack at if I feel that I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need more fuzzy-bums.
