It's too late you can't quit now, you requested to be an aquaponics buddy and now you are. You must follow the aquaponics code of conduct. Besides, you should just think of Mayday as some very colorful sushi. I'm sure he'll be tasty!

Hi Gallo,

Just wanted to let you know that DH has started our mealworm project following your instructions. He picked up a container of 50 worms and so far so good. They have been munching on potato peels the last couple days and tunneling. Should I get more worms? Am excited to "make" treats for my girlies.

That's great! You should definitely get more. I'd recommend starting out with 1-3 thousand to get your colony going quickly. I split an order with Constance earlier this spring and we got them from Petsmart (?) or maybe Petco, I can't remember which (she handled the ordering). They had free shipping and good prices on the worms. I think that some stores might even stock mealworms in 1000 packs. The main expense is in your initial investment in the colony, after that it's just a few dollars a year to maintain. Your girlies are going to love them!

I saw your post in the Emergencies section, I hope the tapeworms are gone soon!

Will check out Petsmart and Petco to add to our "farm".

I am going to pick up meds from the vet tomorrow and get rid of the nasty ole worms. I had to weigh each of my 12 gals for dosages. The vet recommended Panacur (fenbebdazole) suspension for them. He researched different meds including Valbazen and said Panacur looked like the safest for my girls. He also wanted to be cost efficient and not have to give up a paycheck for the meds. He also said to make sure I spread DE in the grass. I already do that in their run, nest boxes and sandy coop floor. I didn't think owning chickens was this hard! I have only been a Mama Hen for a year and so much has happened. Someone must be testing me. Just when my older girls are starting to lay 6-7 eggs a day again..Murphy's Law!!!!

I love my vet. He and the staff are great. They always ask how Gretchen, my GLW, is doing. She had a terrible case of bumble foot on both feet that took months to cure. So glad to have him close by.

Will update on the girlies once their meds have killed off the little varmits!

Sprouts is good. Lots of vitamins and enzymes. An easy to digest little green treat. They do need grit for them, though.

Is the grit in the starter/feed enough or will I need to add more if I feed sprouts

TT! :

I want to be an aquaponics buddy. I have a betta fish in a 3 gallon vase, does that count?

I've built several hydroponics systems (3 is several right?) We have one in the house - not in use right now, and a larger one at Tammy's school. I've got a 55 gal tank with two (really big) fish in it. I was thinking of combining the hydroponics with the fish tank and going aquaponics but the control tower veto'd that flight path.
