Arizona Chickens

All this reading about chicks makes me glad I don't have any. They sound WAY to labor intensive for me right now. Keep posting pics, though, I love seeing those little fuzz balls!

mama hen chris: your chickens had tapeworms??

Where is the posting? I'd like to know what to look for. How to chickens get tapeworms? Yikes!

I was wondering if anyone here is interested in going in with me for getting a mini jersey cow? you can get all the fresh milk you want all you have to do is basically come over and milk her. The cost would cover the cow for food and such.
If anyone is interested can you shoot me a PM.

Yup, my girlies have tapeworms. Never a dull moment around here! Must have been from a wild bird that had fleas and showed up in our yard. The vet said it is rare for this to happen. Look for little white worms on the outside of the excrement. They won't be on the inside. They move around. ( you really need to stare at them to see movement) Am supposed to get my meds today from the vet. All need to be dosed for precaution and then in 10 day repeat.

This is from one of my gals who had loose poop. I think she has it the worst. I know quite a few have it. Dr.said to make sure to add DE to my grass as well as the coop, nest boxes and run. I already do except for the grass..Something new to do now.

Starter does not contain grit; it is not needed with processed feeds.

Ooooo! First I'm hearing of this!
I'm using the Kruse organic feed / starter. - still no grit?

Uless it contains unground seeds or grains, grit is not needed. The grinding that occurs during processing takes care of it. Grit helps mechanically break down foods that cannot be broken down by digestive chemicals/enzymes. Even pelleted foods do not need grit as it has already been ground, then reformed into pellets that digestive juices will...digest. Actually, the process for making feed is that all of it is made into pellets; then starter, grower and even some adult feeds are re-ground into crumbles or mash.

Mama Hen Chris, which vet are you using? If there is a med needed that you can't find at your feedstores, Walco may well have it. (NOT assoiated with Wallmart or Walgreens.) Animal medicines are their specialty. It's only open weekdays, and is located in Chandler on Pecos (I think) west of Arizona Avenue.

I go to All Creatures at 40th St and Greenway. Dr. Bob and Dr. Ingram are great! Dr. Ingram prescribed Panacur (fenbendazole) suspension. Has anyone ever used it? He felt it was safer than Valbazen. Thanks for the suggestion, I will keep that in mind if I can't find a med I need.
