Arizona Chickens

Finite time tonight - forgot my laptop at school and am using Tammy's - meal worms, sprouts & bumble foot? Bumble foot, really?

Almost lost a peeper today. Got home tonight - gave them a treat (OK it was just a small piece of cheese) A'la Meg Moringa Seed some starter mixed with water - Yes they loved it. Even gave a clump to Tammy and she let them eat out of her hand for 4-5 minutes.

Anyway, after the treat and brooder maintenance, I took a second look and only saw 2 production reds (should have 3 as I have one of Tracy's)

Holy missing peeper batman!

She had jumped out of the tote and was stuck between the back of the tote and the wall of the bathtub. 3 incidences of poo indicate she was there for some time. She seems to be Okay-dokey now but sure sceered me!

I put some screen on the top of the tote until I can fab something more permanent-er.

And sometime yesterday they grew wings!

Also the Cornish fatties both have 2 slight bald patches on their shoulders. They don't look pecked or sore, just a tad bit bald. Tracy - are you seeing the same thing?

I'm not uploading picts from dear hearts computer - I'm sorry - you'll have to wait till tomorrow.

I'm into the aquaponics thing too if you want another buddy...

Have a Splendiferous Friday!

Hooray! More buddies!

TT! - The key word is "sustainable", so you don't have to eat him till you can figure out how to make him reproduce. You can take as long as you need to decide how to do that. I must say though, if the rest of us get systems in place and are at the point of having a talapia bbq, and you still have your one little beta, we are going to get suspicious. I'm glad you aren't banned.

Mikey - Did you clear it with the control tower? I'm concerned. In one post you said she vetoed the idea of aquaponics...in the next you were wanting to be a member. Angry spouses can put a damper on our future club activities. I'm glad your runaway chick is safely back at home. And I have to say..."permanent-er" is my new favorite word!

Sprouts is good. Lots of vitamins and enzymes. An easy to digest little green treat. They do need grit for them, though.

Is the grit in the starter/feed enough or will I need to add more if I feed sprouts

Starter does not contain grit; it is not needed with processed feeds.

To she that is concerned....

School Project update...

Candled 5 of 13 last evening and 4 were good and one slightly porous egg seems not to be developing, bad for peepers, good for learning kids. Looks to have not been fertile as it is nice and clear.

Anyway will candle all this weekend and update.

Ooooo! First I'm hearing of this!
I'm using the Kruse organic feed / starter. - still no grit?

She said, "What are you talking about, Aquapoinics?"
I said, "Well we talked about aquaponics a ways back. I'm not getting into aquaponics...probably..."

She rolls her eyes and give me the "knowing smile".

Just imagine a 55 gal aquariam in the living room with a tiered hydroponics set-up above it. The lovely trickle of water from run to run, gently falling into the tank of edible pets.

Did you save this lid from your tote? Just cut out a large rectangle from it and bolt the screen to it. No more missing peepers!

Mine are starting to try to jump out too. I have them in a terrarium with a screen lid, though so they can't get out.
Every time I open it they turn into popcorn...jumping for the top and not quite making it.
I'm going to set up the water heater box brooder this weekend so they'll have lots of room.

Hi Gallo,

Just wanted to let you know that DH has started our mealworm project following your instructions. He picked up a container of 50 worms and so far so good. They have been munching on potato peels the last couple days and tunneling. Should I get more worms? Am excited to "make" treats for my girlies.

I started my red wiggler compost bin again yesterday. Haven't tried the mealworms, yet. I may have to hit Petco and get mealworms. Can they live outside?

I'm glad you found the missing peeper before it was too late! Twice, I've almost lost one on this batch. Once, I was bringing them in the house and accidentally miscounted. One was left outside for a short while until I realized my mistake. Poor little guy, all alone in the dark. The other time, I moved the tractor and the end was sitting on a tiny bump. Just large enough for a peeper to escape underneath. He was outside the tractor trying to get back in. Thank goodness I saw him within minutes, he would have surely died in the heat without water that day, not to mention what the big chickens might have done to the little squirt.

My fatties are also developing bald patches on their shoulders. I wonder if it's because their real feathers are coming in? I remember last time they feathered out really fast.
