Arizona Chickens

Ha HA!

Two little eggs in the middle of the coop floor.

One pure white, one just off white. You might even say the color was...

ready?

Eggshell!

Hahahahahahahaha!

I crack my self up!

Get it? Eggshell? Crack up? Hahahahaha!

Now back into the sun!

Speaking of ground squirrels, I need to build some more pens and a larger run and the best location for the run happens to be right on top of a round-tailed ground squirrel colony. I was thinking the adult chickens might eat the ground squirrels and then it wouldn't be an issue any more, but I'm not sure it is really a good idea. Does anyone have any experience with ground squirrel colonies and chickens?

I don't think your chickens would kill and eat the ground squirrels. I can see them doing that to mice, but the round tailed are 3X the size of an adult mouse. You might want to trap those squirrels out first, then build your pens. Your chickens will eat the squirrels dead and diced up just fine! They also might move on once you start banging and pounding and moving stuff all over their territory. If that is where you want your run, I wouldn't let the squirrels stop you. JMO.

Are the chicken keeping issues located within Maricopa County??? I am fairly certain that Maricopa County Animal Control has NO jurisdiction over chickens at all!

The only laws they enforce are rabies control and loose dogs. I think only the Zoning Department can make that decision and it has to be in written form, officially from them. Any other way would just be "here say". I would be carefull with the rooster though as that may be a noise disturbance ordinance issue.

sorry. But, even then you would still have to be warned in written form. I think we are still in America. Hope everything works out for you. And, if I am wrong, Someone, please let me know, I am not opposed to well intentioned/friendly corrections!!! LOL

If you live in the county (not city) county zoning inspectors, and possibly county animal control have jurisdiction. If you live inside city limits, the city has jurisdiction, and zoning inspectors would cite you if htey believe you are not in compliance with local zoning and city ordinances. The county DOES have some animal control ordinances, every few years there is a tizzy about something or other that the county wants to ban/control. Since I live inside city limits, I don't really keep track of those things. Yes, for everything there is due process.

Good morning folks,

yes another swoop today - no time with all the projects - fast get on - get off whilst the Control Tower cooks up some bacon egg & cheese sammiches for breakfast.

So what color egg would a silkie/cochin cross lay?

Both Fuzzy (aforementioned cross) and Freaky (App Spitz) started squatting! Someone layed a small white egg. The App Spitz was supposed to be my only known white egg layer. However someone (Thought it was Freaky) has been laying HUGE white eggs in very random locations. - like right in the middle of the yard. Lazy Clucker!

Hope all is well with all ya'll - I've gotta get back to work - sorry for the lack of pictures, my camera is now defunct (someone forced the SD card in upside down and forced the battery door shut)

Have a cluck'n one!

Mikey
In my limited experience with cochins, they lay eggs similar in size (assuming bantam cochin) and colour to a silkie. But sometimes in a cross, other breeds have made an impact, too. Generally white egg layers are mediterranean breeds: leghorns, minorcas, etc. and sometimes continental breeds (polish, app spitz, etc.). Once in awhile a bird who normally lays large eggs lays small ones...and vice versa.

the ducks are at it again. they are pacing back and forth along the fencing of the pool, quacking at the children and want to swim with them. the fireman is at work, dare i?
