For your sanities sake I hope all three are pullets. What breed is Cutie anyway?
 
Cutie is a Easter Egger, specifically a Ameraucana cockerel over a Blue Andalusian pullet. I'm very interested to see what the results of the cross will be. Although I'd hoped for more chicks, I'm glad that the one that did hatch successfully was from Inara's egg, she's by far my best layer, and I hope that her offspring will be equally good.
 
Wow! this thread move so fast - I enjoy reading everyone's posts - the pirate jokes were funny and I love those paintings.

I can't quite believe it, but that little dark blue Ameraucana I bought from Mahonri is broody for the 3rd time this year! Three times in the last 4 months!! She was a great momma the first time with her adopted frizzle babies - I ended up breaking her the 2nd time by removing all eggs from underneath her and after about a week or two? of sitting on nothing, she gave it up. After laying eggs almost daily again for a couple of weeks, she has decided to try again and won't get off the nest for the 3rd time. Normally, the frizzles sleep in the nestbox while the Ameraucana hen and all the other babies sleep on the roost, so with her in there, they got ousted. She did let 1 of the 10 week old frizzles sleep with her - kind of odd for a broody hen to share her nest.


Shaun -- did your broody accept the chicks? I keep thinking about calling you to find out - I hope she did. I read about your dog - I'm so sorry. That is a long time for a Saint Bernard to live - it shows what good care you gave your dog - I'm sure it had a happy life.
 
Now I have a 2nd Wheaten Ameraucana that has gone broody. I'm going to keep her outside of the coop... I had her out all day and I guess my run is not predator proof or one of the kids let her in because she is back on the nest... she kicked the other broody off her eggs and the first broody is sitting without eggs. I didn't think Ameraucanas were a broody lot. I was wrong.

She wont leave there side and since there is food and water in there with her she is basically being a jungle gym for the chicks which is sort of funny to watch.

So i havent given any updates lately....

Everyones doing great. I still have the blue wheaton americauna roo. It has to be a roo but still no crowing so he stays right now. Maybe god will be SUPER nice and give me a Mute rooster lol....

I also have one silkie i think may be a roo but only the crow will tell me for sure.

The broody hen was just not going to be broken. I tried everything i could find even the cold water dunk which she didn't appreciate at all. She just sat in the sun dried out and then ran right back to a place to nest.
SO since she was sooo stubborn i decided to just go ahead and get some chicks. It certainly helped that AZKat got those chicks in!!

My adventure was getting her to accept the chicks. I tried after getting home since it seemed as though it wouldn't matter night vs day.
I had given her back her golf balls the day before I got the chicks. So when i got home i removed the golf balls and put the chicks under her. Well it didn't work at all. She freaked out and started pecking at the chicks. I tried multiple times to get her to calm down and accept the chicks but the chicks wouldn't stay under her and she wouldn't have them near her.

So after a call to MaryAnne and some great advice i took out the chicks and gave back broody the golf balls. She almost dove on the golfballs and was very content to push them under her. She looked relieved!

So i waited untill a few hours after dark when she and the chicks were asleep. once i took the chicks outside they were cold and started peeping and huddling with each other. I again removed the golfballs and slid the chicks under her and they stayed there. SHe seemed out of it and all seemed to go well. After checking a ton of times that night and early morning it all went well. I havent had any issues since so everyones doing well. She does let them climb all over her. They play king of the mountain on her back which is funny but she does tollerate them and really guard them so i assume all is well. every night i find the chicks under her and most days they are out exploring their rubbermaid bin they are in.

OK so thats the long version of that story.

Everyone else is also doing well. Some of the birds seemed to have a bit of a runny nose. Its yellowish so i assume that could be a respiratory thing but a few had it last week and now the dont so it seems to be a passing deal. You can see who has it by them rubbing their noses on the ground but no one seems to breathe hard or have any other symptoms. Since it passed after about a week on some of them I am taking the no action stance and if someone seems REALLY sick i will separate them or if i have to cull them. I hope that is the right way to go. Not sure to be honest but I feel good about the course of action.

So yea thats the update. I have been a little brain dead since I had to put Callie down. This one was REALLY hard on me. I will post some cute pictures of her later. Dont want to look at them right now.

Today we get to go out to our old house that was ALMOST short sold (buyer backed out after the acceptance from the back - grrrr) and get the fans down and make sure we have everything out of the house since its scheduled for foreclosure next friday...

Oh my! Yeah Tonka is 100% fine. I have no idea what got into her? She isn't eating any straw now, i locked them both into the sand bottom coop lol.
