Arizona Chickens

Just read through all of the pages I missed.

Glad to hear about all of the good broody mommas that have expected there chicks.

My GLW is doing great at being a momma and the chicks all look good. All of my other hens are good with the chicks also. My EE Monroe is the most curious about them but just sits there and watches my GLW with them.

My two new muscovies are both doing good. The yellow one scratched her eye lid and it looked really bad this weekend. I have been putting her in the bath tub 3 or 4 times a day so she can wash it out. This morning it looks better. The lids are still swollen but the eye isn't gooing. They just have such sharp little nails. She is still eating and drinking great so I think she will be ok.

tofuranch~ My family owns a cabin up in Flagstaff and my grandparents live in it. The cabin is right next to Sultz pass so that huge fire is REALLY close. I guess everyone in that area is just watching and praying. That cabin has been in our family for almost 50 years so we are just biting our nails watching the news.

Laree we'll have to discuss your necrophiliac rooster on the zombie I mean az thread!

Yeah I know it is gross. I don't know if he was:

1-Only showing doing the humpin' because I was crawling around to grab said casualty, invading his territory, and therefore he needed to re-assert his dominance.
2-If in his "new roo-liness hormone swings" could only get his mack on with the sick chicks. That is: they couldn't run away. I was afraid he was actually KILLING the poor things by hopping on the sick chicks when they were already ailing.

He's a big boy, and the dearly departed in question were only 12-16 weeks old. I have never seen him attempt to mate with one of the hens.

Can I ask where you got the Muscovies? we were thinking about it but I couldn't find any locally, and although they WILL ship ducklings I can't imagine they would arrive safely in this heat.

Well my broody is isolated, I put some ice water in one corner and some gamebird feed in the other so she doesn't have to get off.
Tomorrow is day 19 so I guess she is in lockdown. I'm hoping she gets at least two to hatch of the 6 eggs. If she get's none I'll be hunting for chicks for her this weekend.

Noticed a hen with 12 newly hatched chicks down the street in their front yard. Neighbors to the south said this has been a banner year for chicks.... and none of them get fancy feed, just the 50lb bag for $10 stuff at Costco. I saw the most amazing looking roo down on 35th and Earll the other night.

Does anyone know...
Is it bad to store chicken feed outdoors in the shade this time of year?
I have mine on the back porch, always shaded, in those big plastic airtight pet food containers from Costco. When I open them up they smell like hot plastic.

wait what? They have chicken feed at costco?? Is it any good?

It's "wild bird seed" and my friend in the neighborhood to the south say they do famously on it. I'm buying some this weekend to use as a supplement. It's cheaper than scratch!

I got mine from a lady in Marana (just north of Tucson) if you are up for making the drive then PM me and i will give you her #. It took me a long time to find bird locally for me. Try looking around on craiglist, even old post, call the people and they might have new birds hatching.

We buy wild bird seed instead of scratch for the chickens. I think it probably is better for them. I figure they get enough corn in there regular food, I don't want to give them more corn just for a treat.

We buy "Wild Birdseed" at the drug store and use it when we can't get over to the feed store. It contains a lot of millet and milo, not so much corn. They eat it, but they are not real happy with it. Price wise, it is expensive, somewhere about six dollars for a twenty pound bag.

On the positive side, it is lighter and easier to carry on the bus. Bus drivers frown on the fifty pound bags.
