Arizona Chickens

A four-foot fence is a piece of cake to those lighter breeds and young'uns with a substantial wing span. I've seen hens launch themselves in one attempt to fly up to barn rafters and made it. I, personally, would have some type of netting over a run to keep them contained. I would consider them as pheasants, taking off in a hot minute, and landing in a neighbor's yard with a dog, to meet their demise. --BB

Yes, Black Javas. My original birds were from Duane Urch. They could fly, but were much happier on the ground. And they respected my fencing. Then I got some javas from Dan Pennington. His birds are totally different. They kept getting over the 4' fence between yards. Turns out they were staging that flight from the compost bin, so I raised the fencing and blocked that flight path. They still roost on a beam that is over 6' high. I think the older hens get up there in two stages, flying up from the main roost that is about 3' high. But still, it's kind of annoying because I would rather they roosted on the "official" roost where it's easier for me to check them at night.
Maybe they go high so I DON'T check them at night, and they can poop on my head if I try.

Chickens can vary within the same breeds in things for sure. My 3 Australorps from the Rattlesnake Ridge line didn't roost at night but stayed on the ground. Then I got 3 younger Hupp Farm pullets from Chase, and those 3 do roost. Now the older Blue pullet has decided to try roosting with the younger ones too, but not the 2 Splash ones yet.

Marcus my rock star chicken is looking for a new home.
I have a beautiful silver laced polish 8 week old cockerel that I can't keep. My daughter raises show chickens and it's usually not a problem if we get a roo once in a while because she sells them at the county fair in the Spring. He started crowing at 8 weeks old so we can't keep him. I am willing to drive him out to a new home for free. All I ask is that I can see where he will be living. He is so sweet and kind to our pullets

He is gorgeous!!

I have a set of Polish, a trio of boys. If I could build a bigger coop for them, he could totally live with them (With some establishment).

Could I talk to my Ag. Teacher and get back to you?

The babies are hatching! The babies are hatching!!

I awoke this morning to the first hatchling. Mom was a Dorking-mix and Dad was an Ameraucana/White Rock mix. I'm already betting cockerel on this one, but only time will tell.

So far half of the remaining eggs have pipped, but none have begun to unzip. The remaining half are wiggling and rolling around, so I'm really hopeful that this will be a good hatch.

Very cool! I can't wait to start hatching eggs. I got two trios of quality breeding birds yesterday so I'm setting up the Sportsman in anticipation.
