For those who weigh their birds.... What kind of scale do you use? Kitchen, baby, something else?

Some of my birds in feeling their chest bone, keel?, & I'm not sure if it's too much just by feel & holding them. I was wanting to weigh them to get a better idea. Everyone is looking & acting great & normal.

Apart from weighing them I was thinking about deworming. No signs in the poop. Just wondering if as preventative I should. Prefer as gentle-natural a method.

You guys are the best! Thanks!

I use a digital kitchen scale that adjusts from ounces to pounds and grams to kg, and I usually put a wash cloth or something else that's non-slip on the glass surface to improve the likelihood of the bird staying in place. This works well for me until they approach 14+ weeks depending on the bird. Then I just use a human scale, hold the bird and weigh us both together, and then deduct my own weight from the number. (This is sometimes easier to do if you have someone to help you out with hold and releasing the bird.)

The hatch was wonderfully successful! Of the eggs that went into lock down, only one failed to hatch. I think the poor little thing ran out of room in the egg before it finished absorbing the yolk and suffocated.

Here are some baby pictures, because who doesn't love sharing photos of their little chicks?

My lone NN hatchling from my own NN/White Rock cross parents. I have high hopes for this little chick.

Another of mine, this time a cross between my Ameraucana/White Rock rooster and one of my best laying Dorking-mix hens. Given their respective coloring, I really can't wait to see how this hardy little one feathers out.

The third and final chick from my own flock, this time a Bielefelder/Australorp hen and, to my surprise, my Ameraucana/Dorking-mix rooster. (I never knew Harley had won mom's affections!)

And finally, a few of the best shots of my pure Dorkings. I managed to hatch 8 lovely little chicks from these hatching eggs, and right now I'm thinking that 2 of them may be cockerels.

free to a good home .. juvenile silkie rooster... in our 3 silkies we adopted two are roos and so we are looking to re-home.
I am in Tucson
If the white or the black is a rooster, I would absolutely love to adopt one ^^

I would love to do some splash/blue/grey breeding with my white silkie hen when she starts laying again....

my only problem right now is coop space, I cant have any more at home (reached my 10 chicken limit) , so I am going to be building a coop at school. unfortunately, I am waiting for construction to give me the go on whether they will help or not XD

Until then i'm stuck with my tiny 3 x 5 triangular coop and nowhere to put a new bird.....

but hey i've figured it out before and i can figure it out now. Im a great winger

ISO: Silkie Hen(s)

So due to some frustration on my parents part and some pity on my part, I am re-homing my Buff standard sized Bantam Silkie Rooster (I could swear he's standard if he wasn't so light). He will be living at school unless someone decides they need him. I've made him a coop that he will share with some other rooster friends. Bachelor Pad baby!

In his place, I would love to have another silkie hen in my coop, to be buddies with my poor little silkie hen who is my roo's favorite. I've always loved silkies, but every time I try to get a pair of females, I always get a male and a female.... like the heavens are demanding a breeding project XD.

Unfortunately until my little silkie starts laying again and am in a rut. This is another reason I would love a second hen. To breed with the boys I have at school and hopefully start selling silkies and breeding to perfection.

If anyone has a silkie hen that does not meet their standards or that they just don't need, I would love to adopt . (Being a poor HS student, I cannot offer any payment at the moment, and am on a strictly adopting program right now. Just how life works I guess)

If anyone is looking to re-home a silkie hen, please PM me, and we can work something out droop-of wise.

Banaynaychicken,

Yes, the black one is definitely a roo.. he started crowing over the weekend.. when you get some space let me know and I can bring him to you or meet you somewhere in the middle.. I live in Tucson but my kids went to cienega and I have some friends out in vail.. I can make a good excuse to come visit my friends out there and give Lawrence the First a new home :) thank you so much..

he is pretty .. just a little out of place with all my big girls.. little guy chip on the shoulder kind of thing.. the white one is likely a roo too but birthday is july .. so not 100% on Marilyn/Marvin yet.

The wait is finally over, congrats on your hatch!

So you have pure Dorkings now? That's pretty cool. I'm interested to know how they turn out. There ain't many of them around.
