Arizona Chickens

Were those red ants???

One set was a reddish brown, and the other ones that were biting me on the ankles were the bigger black ones. Last year it was the reddish brown one's that were biting me. The Reddish brown ant hill wasn't very big yet, so those were just trying to get started. The Black ant hill was pretty big and there were many of those ants.

I read somewhere here on BYC that boiling water is supposed to finish them off. Might take quite a bit of it.. :idunno
I do use diazinon granules. I take a shovel and lift up the mound, and dump a quantity of granules into hole. All the diazinon is underground at least 6 to 8 inches. Only thing that works long term for me.
I only use chemicals in areas not visited by chickens or children.
I try natural solutions first, but often not successful. :idunno

I have used boiling water for killing ants years ago when I lived in Louisiana, but it's too far between the house and where these anthills were to bother with that. I used Permethrin Prozap Garden and Poultry Dust on and circled around the mound where they were coming in and out at. The anthills were not by the coop, they were away from it.

For ants I use those food granules all you need is few the worker ants take some back and the entire colony dies of course it has to be away from the chickens

When ants are in the run I use rubbing alcohol and a match, carefully of course since the alcohol burns up right away it kills the ants instantly without much fire hazard and then I wet the area for good safety measure of course I stress caution use only in nonflammable areas etc

Finally In the summer I get small frogs coming into the run to enjoy the mud puddles they stay and snack on ants so thats a great nature solution

I like the idea of using something that the adult ants can take with them down into the ant mound and having a good change of killing any queens in there too, and then if any of the ant eggs hatch and feed on what's there they will die too.

If frog's were to find a way into my coop or pen, they won't last long enough to eat many ants. My chickens were eating the lizards that ventured in there last year, along with those horned caterpillar's that were out like crazy last summer.

Ants, flies and roaches are the only bugs I kill and enjoy doing so. Those big black ones are just as rotten as the red ones. Get em!

I was out by the coop today and noticed some ants carrying some of the crumble feed and seemed to be headed in a line someplace else, so I followed them to locate the ant hill. Some of them even were biting me on my ankles. I found 2 ant hills, so took care of them. I figured if they were going to bite me, then they would bite the chickens, too.
There were some in my broody's coop with her chicks a few days ago! They are no fun. Hope your problem is done with!

I get the red ants in the yard! I get bit often if I'm not paying attention - dang they hurt and ITCH! Anyhow I've used DE on them - not my favorite but have no idea what else might work. I've heard cornmeal, used it - not sure what it did. I've used cinnamon, slows them down - if they just move out of the yard I'm okay with that.
@Michelle Guynn CUTE little chickies too! Thanks for sharing those pics.
