Arizona Chickens

UPDATE!!! Had two eggs today with shells!!! Shells feel chalkie is that normal? I did give them calcium citrate with vit d last night and put up misters. Stopped on my way home from work and got some oyster shells. Which they want nothing to do with lol. Just glad to have shelled eggs again! Thanks for everyone’s help!!

Just put the oyster shell's on the side, and they will consume them as they need it. They will figure it out.

Today it wasn't as hot here as the past 2 days, we have wind as well which is bringing down the temps quickly as the sun goes down. I didnt have to turn on the ac today and the chickens have adjusted to the hotter temps so they were out in the shade instead of in the mansions

Tips that's working for me this year,..

I notice my eggers bathe a lot and the buffs will bathe in areas that had been cooled down by the misters so a tip may be to lightly wet where your chickens bathe so they can put the cooler moist dirt on them if you dont already :) seems to be a fave for mine

Also I wet down the coop roof before bedtime and there is shade over the buildings so they are a LOT less hot at roosting time than other years bc they don't receive direct sun any longer

I moved a shade structure near the garden and wet down the loose dirt under there. Everyone was dust bathing today in that area.

@BlueBaby I have to go back and find it - saved it somewhere so I could remember - HA! Its a solar powered smaller fan with a bucket'ish type structure in front that you can put ice, frozen bottles, etc for a cooler area. I WANT one of those for my shade structure that is quite large and used by the big girls now. I feel so bad for the new girls since this is their first summer heat - kinda like your first hot flash! But we too are wetting down areas, we have mud puddles and ice dishes. Now its time to figure out the solar power thing. I guess I could use electricity until I get it figured out. We'll see.
@Suzyqschickens I used a bowl for the oyster shell for years. They usually eat it at night with dinner stuff - they will go get it. Very seldom during the day. You got this!

Now you have me very curious! I hope that you find it, because I'd like to see what it is that you are talking about. Are they expensive?

Is it something similar to this? Have seen @ home depot.

The one at the link that you just gave seems to have a battery that will run on mist for no more than 2 hour's? @FeatherPugs said a solar powered one. I'll wait and see if she can relocate it again.

By the way, how is your flock doing these day's? My NN's don't even go under my mister's like some of my other one's do.

I saw the solar after I posted, sorry. I'm waiting until she gets back you too :highfive:

Everyone is hanging in there. It's hot of course. How about your flock?

Mine seem to be ok for now. I just hope the monsoon comes and it won't get any hotter. Two of my Crested Cream Legbar pullets started laying those little blue eggs recently. I'm still waiting for the White NN pullet's and the White Breese pullets to start in on theirs. The White NN cockerel has started breeding the girl's. I like his crow better than the Australorp's, because his isn't as loud.

I must admit my naked neck girls are super sweet and I see them stress less in the heat. I'd love a black and white NN flock. Solid colored chickens but those 2 colors only. That's my eventual goal anyway.

What are your goals with your breeding program?
