Arizona Chickens

Since you keep indoor pets, consider Seramas :love I just LUV mine. and I have a supply available near my location. I can only keep hens. Here are my current 2.View attachment 2216200View attachment 2216201
I have no idea why this chickens neck looks soooooo long. Its the only closeup I have in my pix files.
That's exactly what i was thinking!!! I found a guy who has some silkied seramas a couple miles from me! He will breed more next year (he has other breeding projects, the super fancy tails right now), which is good timing for me. I was thinking a Male might be nice, but it's so quiet where i live, even that tiny crow will probably echo down the street. But ill have time between now and maybe spring to work on a nice indoor flight.

I love your birds! How old are they there? Do you keep them indoors?

Are seabrights similar in size, enough to be caged together? I think they are pretty too. I like having flying birds.

Ive been letting the D'Uccles out so they can stretch their wings. They can now clear my head, so probably 6' up and going about 20'. I had to catch daisy mid flight because she was going too fast...not sure if she thought she'd magically go through the wall! Ill let them master flying/ landing before i possibly trim their flight feathers. I have a small parrot who had her flight feathers trimmed too young, so she just crashes when she does fly.

My parrot, Dylan, has the same problem. Won't try to fly at all. We have "flap" exercise time when I hold her and she flaps hard. She was in a small cage for so long, that she did not like the big new cage with room to spread her wings. She hangs on the door begging to go back to her indoor cage. "Let's Go!", obvious to me that she does not like new big outdoor cage, even when I sit on the patio. Birds need to learn while young, they imprint for life those habits. I give the chicks grass and dirt starting right away. The 2-week-olds are flying 6 feet across the brooder.

Yes, it's so important, and the ones who can't handle flying are gone if they ever get out. They can't fathom how to get back!
I have had parrots that DID learn to fly, but wheat lazy butt perch potatoes! So id make them come out of their cage, kind of gently toss them upwards, then make a fist in the air. I usually yell "hand" so they make the association of where to land. That helps if they get out. But this little one already had a bloody nose after a crash, surprised she didn't die. She prefers to climb though, pretty active. And she talks, and screams FEED ME when she KNOWS you have French fries.

Ha, thanks previous owner! Dylan's favorite thing to say when she sees someone eating something she wants is, "Want more". My daughter has chickens in her yard in San Diego. I tried to feed them a french fry and they would not touch it. She only ever let them eat Organic pellets, now they will not eat scraps from the table!

Ceiling fan blades are a top choice for places that they want to land. (But shouldn't)!:rant
Ugh.. i hope they don't do that. Theres a fairly large branch in going to cut from my desert willow to use as a perch for them. Hoping they will favor that!

I will have them in their chicken diapers soon enough (they need to grow just a bit more for them to fit).. i have no idea if they can fly with them on???

I would love to see a flying chicken with diapers on!!! LOL There are parrot harnesses with diapers that they can fly in, but parrots are strong flyers, not like a chicken for flight. They will want to get to the highest thing that they can. In my old house I had to remove the cieling fan, cockatiel chicks learning to fly went there like they were programmed.

Well im going to make the branch enticing, with toys and give them treats there, and itll be in front of the window. They get super excited watching the outside birds. Ill keep telling myself this for the time being 🤣

Windows can be pretty dangerous to beginning flyers. Very attractive to launch from the perch to get to those outside birds, or fly past the perch instead of landing. I have had outside birds hit my windows because they saw another bird inside.:)
