Arizona Chickens

I can report that this does not deter my neighborhood Tucson coyotes in the slightest.  Neither does the urine of my dog.  Nor does me standing right there next to the chickens, for that matter.  Theoretically, it might work where coyotes have little human interaction, but here in the city it's just one more smell that has little impact on their lives.

I have to admit I am not surprised. City Coyotes have little manners. They are so used to people. When I go camping coyotes do not worry me, they are polite for the most part. When I was carrying for my mom in Sun City West, I was startled by just how un afraid they are. They learn how to get a easy meal. But when you are grabbing at straws. . . . . . That coyote really bothers me, I keep thinking what workable solution to the danger. I rather like coyotes in the wild, it is my responsibility to keep my animals safe. But the city situation is something else. I worry about my girls and a 5' wall. Just because I do not see or hear them like I used to doesn't mean they are not here. This hunter told me all kinds of things about animals, but non of it is workable. You can not fire a weapon in the city.. . There are not many options I' so sorry.

Just be careful what you wish for! My Mom started just doing foster care for my two cousins. You saw what she ended up with at 55 years old! Six kids between 4 and 13 years old. CPS is trying to convince her to take their illegal mother's 6-month old that she gave birth to after the latest kids were taken away. Without buying a new house and a small bus, she can't take anymore though. God bless those that do foster and adopt, though. It is not all fun and games, that's for sure.
having children in general is not always fun and games, no matter where they come from. children are a blessing and a blank canvas. adults are the ones that damage them. it is not the childrens fault, children are taught by example and some of it is also genetic. but it is also proven that you remove that child from an unhealthy environment and some things can be reversed with therapies and patientience and love.

you make me sad the way you speak of your mother, as if she is "stuck". some people do foster care out of the goodness of their hearts and then there are those that just want the paycheck

Great photos! Love the names.. I might use a few for our new girls.. Thank you for sharing...

I was in no way saying the kids are not fun and games. I am in complete agreement on what you said there. Several of the ones she has have severe issues that are having to be worked through. From being drug babies to being abused to watching someone killed in the same room as her when she was six. Therapy, counseling and a loving family are just part of what they get now.

When I said it isn't all fun and games, I was referring to the extremely corrupt and broken system we call Child Protective Services. It is a constant fight to get anything done for the kids. My Mom has had one of the boys for four out of five years that he's been alive. He was returned to his Mom the first time, despite them severing his older brother. This second time, it's been over a year and they are still squabbling about severing. She fails to make visitiation 80% of the time and has done none of the parenting classes.now, they want to take the boys from my Mom and their "family" to unite them with their six-month old brother that they've never met. It doesn't seem to matter that their older brother was adopted by my parents and has been there for years.

My parents have done it out of the goodness of their hearts. They love them dearly and wouldn't change anything. Again, the problem goes back to the way CPS treats them and tries to push them around. It's a regularly battle just getting and maintaining the cojncelinv or therapy. It's a nightmare that nobody should have to deal with.

Morning all, does anybody have a spare Blue Slate or Lavender turkey tom? My lavender tom has a sore foot or leg, limps a bit, and is not breeding his hens. I will candle the next batch in a few days, but the first 5 eggs I got were all infertile and I have not seen him breed. I'm getting fertile eggs from my Royal Palms, Narragansett, and Mottled Black, but not from him. PM me if you know anybody in Arizona with a tom of breeding age. Thanks!

Children! I'm not the mommy type, yet I love children. I have not had the training and at times perplexed by what to do. It was not until I had grand children I found out everyone is perplexed by kids. Most people ignore it and let there installects handle it. I kept seeking help. I totally missed up my first daughter. I was told if I didn't do this or that I was a bad parent. At age 5 my daughter was in treatment for a month, when I got her back my NORMAL little girl was no more. In 40 years later, this would not have happened. We are the ones that do the damage to our kids, some do damage on advise of the degreed experts that KNOW all the answers. And really what is the mommy type? I only know a handful of woman that are. The reast of us become mommy type though love, fire, and laughter, maybe by the time the grand kids come me start having a handle on it.

Yes the system is very broken. My sisters daughter work for a year to get a girl she knew help, took on fighting for this young girls sister as well. Despit the personal cost to her health she fought to get the children into a good home, and much needed medical care. When she started this fight for young lives she did not know that they would be in her home and the violence of younger girl. She found the girls uncle, found out he had once tried when the oldest was baby to get custody of her. Fast forwarding to today. Both girls love my niece, the oldest one has glasses and can hear, is a nurse. The youngest girl loves her life now, no longer violent, and is a good student.

This is the way it has always been: systems, good people, bad people, confused people and misguided people. My God Bless all those good people.

So I am a 4-h leader in flagstaff and I'm looking for some fun activities and things to talk about with them any ideas

Just got back from an awesome, kick me upside the nuts, bike ride in Gardner Canyon. I am so out of shape. The ride to the end of the rode was hard, but bombing down the road all the way back was so worth it. Crossed the running creek many times, at hi speed. So. Much. Fun.

Feet up for an hour or so and then, pork ribs on the grill! Homebrew will be consumed.
