Arizona Chickens

I had ducks that were *just* starting to lay when the dog attack happened, and they were, of course, killed. Not even eaten, just killed.

I'd love more, so that I can finally make pastries and custards with the eggs! I just need a swimming place for them in the new barn... I start work next week, so hopefully I'll finally have the money to buy a little pool soon.

Awesome! I'll be pretty conspicuous... look for the teenage gal in the wheelchair.

I will be there!!!
I have a few Ameraucana roosters and a pullet to show.
Awesome! It's always so cool to meet BYCers in real life!

I hope you can get some nice birds while helping out your friend.

Are they good with dogs? Do they need to go together?

So who are you getting?
sill, they are used to 16 dogs, and other cats. they do not need to go together. I just rescue and have too many and they are fixed and hunt mice but will need supplemental food.

I'll be there, attempting to organize the Friday evening potluck during coop-in. For those who are planning to bring stuff, we could use some actual dinner type food

Probably won't have anything to show. Someone's loose dogs killed my best birds. There is one Black Java cockerel I might show if he grows back his sickle feathers in time. He would make everybody else's birds look really good.

I thought I had the entry forms but can't find them at the moment. The show is November 21-23. Usually the entry forms (and payment) have to be in at least 10-14 days ahead. I will post the forms if I can find them. If you are on Facebook you can look up the Tucson Poultry Pigeon and Fancy Fowl Club and pm Michelle (the page owner) for the November show info.
They are supposed to post the entry forms on the Tucson Clucks FB page but have not as of yet.

I was heading out for the evening early yesterday afternoon and when I went to lock up the free ranging chickens I heard a commotion from inside the chicken coop. There inside was a Cooper's hawk. A Cooper's in the coop surprised me, we commonly see them in the run but this bird went in through the shade cloth strips covering the pop door. I recently put a feeder in the coop for some new chickens that are not yet treadle feeder trained and the sparrows found it right away. The hawk must have had easy pickings once it found it's way inside, like shooting fish in a barrel. Up close these hawks are so much smaller than you'd thin
wow that is scary. Glad it did not bother your chickens
I am a cook, baker, and bottle washer extraordinaire... what kind of food would you like? I'm sure I can whip something up. Pizza rolls are a favorite at home, and they can feed a crowd! How many people come to the potluck on average?

Trust me, I know how that feels... two dogs, in the middle of our wide open desert, managed to find our barn, dig under the run, and kill every single bird we had. All we have now are laying hens and some roosters that snuck in. I miss my pretty sumatras...
what kind of food is needed?

I am a cook, baker, yum!! Do you ever use duck eggs?
I hear bakers say, "duck eggs are the difference between good, & extraordinary pastries"

and bottle washer extraordinaire...

if you need ducks let me know. I have several breeds and the dollar general had small pools for 8.88 at the beginning of the spring. also look for sand boxes at the good wills. they work amazingly well.

I will definitely let you know! The place nearest to me with ducks is Vista Feeds in Sahuarita, and I hate how they treat their birds... all cramped up with barely any room to move, dead birds left on the ground, dirty waterers. Ew.

And thanks for that tip!

This is going to be the best BYC meetup ever!

Handsome, handsome boy!! Love his barring... looks like a cuckoo silkie! What's the cross you used to get him?

I got him at OK Feeds. Someone had returned their whole flock and he was the straggler. Last one left. Maybe because he is so goofy looking? He is probably a mix, but I guess we could call him a cuckoo Silkie. I love the tiny streamer feathers on his neck and head. A neat combo between Silkie fluff and regular feathers. He is still growing these feathers in. His tail feathers are old and ragged. I'll be curious how they come in when new. I really like his looks, even if he is not to standard. I have one blue Silkie (Georgette) and an unsexed juvenile white. @AZChiknGoddess said Georgette and Stan could make black barred, blue barred, black and blue chicks. I hope they breed. I don't have a way of isolating them as a breeding pair right now. I hope she does get broody though. It would be fun to see her raise her own. She is the Queen Bee. Loud and honking all the time. Sometimes I think she is part duck! LOL.

grats on the job! I started out with a hard plastic kiddie pool that i got at petsmart for 10 bucks! of course, now the spoiled ducks have a big ol in ground pond. Check walmart and petsmart, it may be out of season now though. :( If you can't find anything let me know, I'm in mesa, but if you need the pool I am sure we can find it a ride at some point!

Eeeewww!!! My bedraggled Martha looks like a diseased porcupine. All these new feathers coming in and standing up like porcupine needles. Looks really painful and tender. Poor baby - not a happy camper.

The other one that has just a bare back doesn't seem to be growing any feathers. These are the only ones with missing feathers but there has been no piles of feathers anywhere so not sure about the molting or if the rooster has tore out their feathers since all the other hens, the same age, don't have this problem but some have their top feathers on their backs missing. Martha better stear clear of Roody.
