Oh wow, wonderful girl... Envious..Had a little time for the garden so I spent it turning the compost. Of course with a little help from some of the girls! A gold sex-link and welsummer checking out the turned out bin. Never know what you might find lurking in the almost finished materiel.My olive egger scratching for treats. This girl is way too brave, I have to be careful not to step on her while I'm working with the bins.
My three bins. L to R they hold new materiel, compost materiel that is actively cooking, and finished compost. I can add or subtract the boards on the front when I need to for holding more stuff or to fork it out for air.
Middle bin with all the front boards off and most of the materiel out. I usually leave it like this for a day or two before I fork it back so the chickens can help work the stuff. They will spread it out as they do so and help add oxygen.
The first bin not yet half full of new materiel in contrast to the second bin that's been cooking for a couple of months. It doesn't take long to turn into black gold! The compost gets hot as it's decomposing and in winter the girls love to root through and sit or just stand in the hot compost.

To cool.. We have to change the duck's water every day.. We use this old fountain.. It is on the left of the photo.. We keep it by a plant so we don't waist the water..Ok here is a terrible picture of the waterer, I took it this morning. You should be able to see how it works, the birds stick their heads in the white tube and drink the water, ducks can stick all of their face in and clean their nares and eyes, the chicks just dip their beaks as needed. Most importantly, it is virtually impossible to get the water dirty. Sometimes they manage to get some feed in the water, but it mostly collects in the bend. We've been talking about adding a filter but honestly, it hardly ever gets dirty.Once the chicks are in their coop he's promised me a 7 gallon one, with multiple spouts and everything. Deluxe!

I like that waterer, and might have to try this idea. The container is plastic, correct? We always have lots of pvc stuff here so assembling one of these should be fairly simple. I hope. LOL Thanks for sharing this with us. My girls drink a lot of water and I have the standard plastic ones that need cleaning daily. My hubby needs another "honey-do" to keep him occupied.
