Arizona Chickens

It could have been me who mentioned it. No, but if you use it, nothing will grow there for a long time, and what little bit does will not be as thick as it was before. The pool salt can't be just thrown on the ground. It has to be watered into the soil. Use Pool Salt, not the Water Softener salt. Water Softener salt is bigger chucks and won't flow as well, and it takes longer to dissolve when you hose it down.
I got one of those mini hand-held roto-tillers that should turn over the soil. It digs 6 inches deep and 6 inches wide. Haven't tried it yet (sitting in the box for 4 years). Just need it for some small sections in back.

Somebody mentioned pool salt several months ago...was that you? If it really works, that would eliminate my $42/month weed control folks that do the front/sides of my yard in my HOA (Home Owners' Assassination).

Are there any chemical agents in the salt that could cause concern? There are some places in my back yard that I would like to eradicate weeds.

Salt will poison your soil. More or less permanently. And it will spread with every soaking rain - either down deeper into the soil, or horizontally toward stuff you and/or your neighbors WANT to grow. If it goes deep you may eventually be able to plant shallow-rooted plants there after a while, but deeper-rooted plants will usually die.

I lived in a house where nothing would grow in the front yard, but the back yard was lush. I suspect a previous owner had used salt on the front. We could grow a few shallow-rooted, salt-tolerant plants but could never get a large shrub or tree to survive. Haven't lived there for 20+ years but I still curse whoever did that to the soil.

Chickens.... they can be so wonderful for keeping your blood pressure low! (and wonderful for raising it too!!) lol

Today i'm sitting with my bubus, after giving them a lunch treat, they all sat around me and starting preening all you hear is their little beaks on feathers and some start dozing off as i cuddle close to Mohawkie who chose to sit in my lap... peaceful :jumpy

:goodpost: It's little moments like that which make me so happy I have my chickens. My brown leghorn will even preen my hand sometimes when she's in my lap, it tickles and makes me laugh. I want to put a hammock up in the coop one day but I'm afraid I would bring a good book in there and just never come out.

I keep forgetting to mention this, but I still have 3 two-week old pure Australorp chick's here if anyone is interested in them. There are 2 Blues, and 1 Black.

You can't have any of my chicks that are mixed with the Naked Neck's, yet. I'm still working on those.

Would anyone within the Southeast part of the state (I'm in Bisbee) like to split an order of Bantam Mille Fleur day old chicks with Hoover's Hatchery $4.20 per chick / 15 chick minimum (free shipping) / next ship date January 9. They usually ship a couple of extra chicks so it will most likely still be odd but we can adjust for whoever gets the extra chick if it ends up being an odd number. I have a warm room in my house set aside for delicate birds and chicks, so I can board your chicks for a few days if you can't get pick yours up right away. They ship on Tuesdays and I've received mine the next day. They ship with Grogel and straw liner in a small box to keep the babies warm. I can pick up early at the post office which is very close to my house. I love the breed but I just don't have the room for 15 once they are grown.

I searched the net but didn't find anything... anyone notice your chickens eyes change color during a molt? My gold eye girls got darker like brown sugar with red tints like their rooster who has redder eyes that glow orange when they molt. My guess it's the hormones that are triggering feather growth and stopping egg production,I'm glad to see some turning back to golden again, it's weird and I couldn't find this topic anywhere..

I'm a little hot under the collar this morning. Coworker that I've given some eggs to asked me for a dozen and I had to say no because my neighbor asked for 2 eggs over the weekend so she didn't have to go to the store, I gave her dozen and she gave me cookies. Good trade, right? Yes, it was a good trade because the cookies are damn good.

My coworker has an attitude about not getting free eggs! Excuse me? So, I told her I'm charging $3.50 for a dozen eggs, $4.50 if you don't bring your own carton now. I have expenses to cover. She's not happy. She can go to walmart and buy her eggs then.
