Arizona Chickens

Hmm.. I've got Bresse laying hens, but only 5 month old cockerels that aren't really ready yet. I may have some later on, like maybe in a couple months. Not sure if I want to breed from such young cockerels, though. I may wait until September to put them together. They are all non Greenfire, different line.
I've been wondering about the meat quality of the Svart Hona's though... I understand they have black meat like the Ayem Cemani's, right? What's the flavor/quality? And what about "quantity"? Are they meaty or a smaller/lighter breed?

They taste lime Chicken. LOL. Sorry. I couldnt resist. Actually I haven’t had one yet. We have 3 spare Roosters from a different source we won’t breed. They will likely eventually be invited to dinner.

Most say you cant tell them apart from AC. The SH are really good natured birds. They are a bit smaller. In fact 2.5 weeks ago i hatched 7 SH and 7 Bresse and the Bresse are growing much faster

They taste lime Chicken. LOL. Sorry. I couldnt resist. Actually I haven’t had one yet. We have 3 spare Roosters from a different source we won’t breed. They will likely eventually be invited to dinner.

Most say you cant tell them apart from AC. The SH are really good natured birds. They are a bit smaller. In fact 2.5 weeks ago i hatched 7 SH and 7 Bresse and the Bresse are growing much faster

I would take one or two hens in a HEARTBEAT. unfortunately I live too far.

This morning I have good news and kind of not good news. The good news is, Artemis the Australorp laid her first egg yesterday! The shape was a little funny (long & pointy) but hey, she's a brand new layer, so that's ok! I am so happy, now all ten gals are officially laying hens The part I am worried about (I worry about them too much, I know) is now her voice seems to be going away? Kind of like when a human gets a cold/sore throat and your voice sounds froggy. She usually has a very distinct little trill sounds and now it's like a whisper. I checked for anything in the throat, found nothing. Crop was big last night and empty this morning. Eating, drinking, and pooping on schedule. We had issues with tapeworms in the summer but I don't think they affect the throat area and I'm deworming regularly. Any ideas of what this could be?

Maybe she wore out her voice singing her eggs song in celebrating her first egg?

Congratulations! I wouldn't worry about her voice unless it persists and she develops other symptoms. I've actually had two hens that used to have loud voices that now have more whispery ones, but they're otherwise perfectly healthy. I guess even chickens can get frogs in their throats?

I love the black birds, but that's a bit too far of a drive for me, just for chicks. I may be talked into the hatching eggs later. I'll probably be collecting the end of March for an April hatch. I've already got possible Croad Langshans, Black Javas, and I'm crossing my fingers for some of DesertChic's Silver Dorkings, lined up for it. Gonna do a slow growing breed hatch for April so they can grow all summer.

I've already got possible Croad Langshans, Black Javas, and I'm crossing my fingers for some of DesertChic's Silver Dorkings, lined up for it. Got new hatching eggs every day . Well almost everyday. If you are headed into Phoenix area and want to meet. Let me know. I live in the west valley but go over to the east quite often and could meet with chicks or eggs.

Thank you for the quick reply! I was hoping it could be just that, a hoarse throat. I thought it could be from dust too possibly. It seems better after she takes a drink. In fact I thought she sounded a little better this morning, but now my barnevelder is sounding a bit off too. I'm not sure though, Biddy barnevelder has always been more of a "croaker". Some of their alfalfa got wet a week ago in the rain but I spread it out and it dried up the next day, no mold. Now it's raining again. Even though the run is covered I think I might take the alfalfa out. I hope it's not a respiratory issue. Their breathing sounds fine.

The first of my SGDs have just started laying again. I know of two for certain and am waiting for the remaining ones to start laying too. These girls have been slow to end their strike and their molt, but we're getting closer. Maybe next month???? At least their eggs are much larger now than they had been.
