Arizona Chickens

My girls love the colder weather! They lay best and most comfortable during cooler times. I have 7 layers and all are laying every other day so I get 4 then 3 the next day and so on.... 7 eggs every 2 days :ya right now they are at "power hour" the last hour of eating before bed and they are snacking on a mix of kale, cilantro, scratch, and steamed corn!

I know, but better warm than cold, right? All of this cold weather changes have to be hard on the flocks for egg laying, plus there has been a lot of fluctuation's in my incubator from it so I have to keep a better eye on it. My best hatching rate came during this past summer during our high heats!

The cooler temperatures haven't been a problem for my birds. I'm getting 3-4 dozen eggs per day right now, which is a far cry better than 8-12 eggs per day just a couple months back. And the eggs are HUGE! Many of my girls' eggs are edging towards 3 ounces each.

I'm the one who hates the cold and damp...especially when it's time to fill all of the water containers. That off spray is cold!

I know what you mean about hating the cold, and as far as the off spray of the water goes you have to stand out of the direction that the wind is blowing to. By the way, have you seen Dorthy's house blow by again today?

Ooooooh boy...I went to the feed store today to grab some chicken scratch, and apparently my "crazy chicken lady" vibes were in full force because the owner asked if I would be willing to help them with some chicks. They got a huge order in the mail and of course som just are not thriving. She said it was heartbreaking to watch the weaker ones struggle while people come and go, handling them and whatnot. She was so willing to give them to someone who could give them a shot at survival, she even gave me a bag of chick feed for free. I could not say no. I am now the proud owner of two little babies! Not sure on the breed, we think partridge something. I don't think they will survive, but they will be spoiled and treated right.

Meant to add this :love
