Put the static Idea to rest. It was not the culprit. Your Hard Drive was not toasted, but damaged by Malware. You would not be able to install a new operating system on a toasted HD.Crap! I come back and have like 6 pages to catch up on! Had a big snaffu with the laptop last weekend. Let my step daughter use it to check her email. Long story short - she used her sleeve to wipe off the touchpad, which I'm assuming sent a static shock through everything and toasted the hard drive... and my phone was connected by usb at the time and it wiped the SD card in it, too. I've spent the last few days trying to figure out if anything could be saved. Fortunately I backed up everything last December so I didn't lose all... but everything from the last 5 months, including ALL the pics I'd taken of my babies, are gone. I finally had to bite the bullet and fresh install a new operating system. So whatever I've posted here or on fb since the middle of last December is all that exists of those pics...
On the plus side, with this fresh install my computer is running like greased lightening!!!
Whatever happened to your computer was just coincidence of the touch pad wiping.
Todays computers unlike older ones do not come with operating systems discs. You need to make your own. If you would have created a SYSTEMS IMAGE, and a Systems repair disc, you would not need to buy a new operating system. (most of us do not do this BTW

An updated Antivirus Program is a must to have. I did say UPDATED CONTINUOUSLY/REGULARLY.
Your router needs to be set up properly also . They have a FIREWALL that is very helpful/essential as well.
Of course your computer now is running like Greased Lightning. There is nothing on it to slow it down. In time it will be burdened with more and more things that will slow it down. There are things that can be done to clean those things out.
Glad you did back up some of you things before.
