Arizona Chickens

I'm wondering about those blondes. Is their coloring now any indication of how they will look later? The ones closest to looking like they'd be all cuckoo later were the one that hatched in May and didn't make it, and the one that didn't make it today, the dark one with the small yellow spot.

But the ones I got are super cute, and the two that are two days old are full of themselves! The third one is still trying to dry off. And chick #1 still thinks it should come and talk to me. :D
so as a mad scientist who's never hatched anything, I almost think you should concentrate on the dorking/leghorn crosses, if the pure barred leghorns have so far not hatched very well. hmm, what a nice cross that'd be!

Now the darned ant's are out there re-building the anthill's again and gathering up food after the rain. I discovered them as I was walking around the yard picking up stuff that last night's storm had blown around. Got to mix up some more of that Permethrin 10 to take care of those ant's today before they discover the food where the chicken's are.

I hate ants! fortunately I don't have many, but at one of my several former homes I got bit once, and it hurt really bad. Be careful!

I am careful, and go though this every year. I have learned that right after it rain's is one of the best time's to find out where the hill's are at, because they are all busy at and near it. I pour the solution down the hole where they are going in and out of.

A cross of opposites! Mellow Dorkings and flighty Leghorns. I wanted my Dorkings for broodies and for a rooster to go with the Naked Neck hens, for tasty meat destined chicks.:drool
Now, I have 2 Dorking cockerels to choose from, only one seems to have the Red color, so I might try out how Dorking tastes sooner than I expected. The Cuckoo Marans cockerel is surprisingly large, I am impressed and would order more of them, dark eggs are popular and the boys are pretty good size. Next year I might put in another order from Sandhill Preservation for just the Welbars and the Cuckoo Marans, there is a limit of 10 each for those breeds, so I would order 20 and he considers that enough to ship. I know where to get more nice NNs, too!

yes, there's smoke (not irritating anyone's eyes though), and the firefighters have really been holding the fire at bay. I think it's about 8 miles due south from my place. It's been going north and west so even if it jumps the crown king/cleator road (a fire break) it should miss almost all of spring valley. but it'd have to be several more times active than it's been, to do that in a single day.
We can see some smoke from here, but the smell is gone from the little rain yesterday. The humidity alone ought to slow that fire down!

There are people on the Dorking Facebook page who raise them and usually have extras to ship. If you want, I can ask them for you.

I will check out facebook, thanks. I will have 1 extra male, it seems a shame to eat a rare breed, but I eat the Barred Hollands. No one wants extra males. I will be happy with 1 nice cockerel and 2 pullets of the Dorkings. The rest of his harem will be 5 nice Naked Neck hens.

If you had an extra silver grey Dorking male, I'd be planning a road trip. :)

That would make an interesting mix--cuckoo colored Leghorns and silver grey Dorkings. No idea how the color would turn out, but maybe breed for great egg laying ability, 5 toes, and whatever interesting traits show up? LOL!

Somebody wants to say hello!
