Arizona Chickens

I'm thinking of letting broody NN Bresse mix have some eggs to incubate. If she's still broody next week I'll have the eggs ready that I want her to hatch and a pen. I also have a 1 year old broody Barred Holland as a backup if she quits sitting.

Anyone have success in getting rid of ground squirrels here in AZ? They are digging up holes everywhere.
I had something like that chew up one of my extension cords once. I made up a mix of rosemary oil, oregano oil, cinamon oil, mint oil, cedar oil and diluted it, sprayed it on things. It seems to work on squirrels and rabbits. I spray it on plants too. I've talked to people who use squirrel cages (hardware cloth) to protect the root balls when they plant, but I don't know how they protect the above-ground part of the plants...

That's really being prepared, having a backup for your broody!
And the incubator is backup to both broodies! I've never had a broody hatch something for me. It would be great if she would do all the work of raising chicks too - a girl can dream, right? I feel like that would be light years ahead of what I have to do incubating.

No luck here- but I just got some traps in the piles of stuff from my neighbor's farm sale. I have no idea how to use them - she explained it to me but I'll have to look up instructions now that she's moved to OH. I think she used them for moles, voles or ground squirrel, or whatever was down there.

Gophers or rock squirrels? We have both. Victor gopher traps are the best for gophers, for the rock squirrels you need a small animal box trap. so it depends on which varmint is involved.

I was leaning more towards building one from scratch. Other than it being more sturdy and designing it how I'd want it, I feel like my son would love helping me with this project! I've been reading up on Ameraucanas and Australorps. Should I look into other breeds as well? From what I'm reading, these two breeds do okay with our lovely summertime heat.
I’ve had Australorps before. If they are very fluffy they tend to not do well in the heat. I lost two that way. My hatchery Australorp did better. She didn’t have the fluff. That being said, my son has an Australorp roo and tons of babies from him with some NNs and he does ok, I think he’s about four now.
