Arizona Chickens

haven't been successful at that, yet. Our coop is chain link. We wrapped the bottom 3 feet with 1/2 inch mesh to keep rodents and snakes out, but forgot to think about tweety birds. They make such a mess. It's gross. I guess we could wrap the rest, but that can be expensive.
If you have suggestions, I'm all ears (eyes)

Good morning Arizona:frow I'm late getting started this morning. I was watching a scary Halloween movie. Halloween 2, 20 years later. I usually don't watch scary movies. This one got my attention. I will never watch one at night, unless I watch a comedy after. LOL!

What is everybody up to this morning? I am going to work on the pen again today. I will see how many times I change my mind today.

I put chicken wire and sun screen as well as a camo military style netting over top of that. I had a problem for awhile. The little birds can get in the smallest hole. My chickens would chase them. I guess they got the idea and decided they didn't want to get eaten. I will leave the top covered like that and just open all the sides for the winter to let the sun in.

We shall see.

Everyone have a great day. I have got to get busy. Womans work is never done. I can create work, if I don't have any lined up.

Good Morning All,

Pati - good luck getting your fence moving along.

And thank you and GC both for you bird out of chicken food comments.

My chickens have free run of the back yard and no roof to keep out the birds. The doves love to to come scavengering. My current defense is to put food out 3 or so times a day and not leave it out all the time.

The black astralorps seem happy to share with the other birds, so until I get serious about feeding all the visitors or making a covered run, I am on feeding duty each day.

Morning all!

Had to go to work today (I usually work from home on Thursdays) because someone decided to permanently "gift" me with all his work.

So here I am. Kinda stinks because the DH is leaving for the annual guy trip this afternoon, and an old college friend of ours flew in late last night to go with him. So, I don't get to say bye to the DH, and I don't get to catch up with my friend.

I am totally plotting my revenge on my coworker. Perhaps I will break out the annoy-o-tron 5000 and hide it in his office. I have used it before to good effect. Muahahahhaha!

Anyway---- this morning I am pretty sure I heard one of my suspected roosters trying to crow. It was like a boy going through a voice change trying to sing the duet from "Carmen" with a sick cat.

I am not sure it was one of mine, though. I don't know if my neighbors have teenagers. It seems a bit early for mine to start crowing.

I am getting ready to make a scrambled egg sand. on ww toast, a little cheese and salsa. I should be good to get to work after that.
My chicken work seems to always be first. House has gone to the killer dust ball's protection. If you don't move something you don't have to dust it. and house work can give you warts.

Oink, oink.... sigh.......... It looks like the swine flu has finally caught up with me.

I had a slight fever last night and one all day so far. Great!!!

I hope the rest of you are doing well!

As for the little bird problem. Try some bird netting around the part of your fence that isn't wrapped with mesh. It should work and it's not terribly expensive. I also feed my chickens in their house so the birds don't know it's there. Best of luck...

Edited to add: You can buy bird netting at home depot or local nurseries.

Crystal - so sorry you aren't feeling well. Thank you for the bird netting idea. I have used bird netting in the past. Right now I have it hanging down from my covered patio to keep the patio free of chicken droppings!

Thanks guys... Yeah, Larissa, I think road trip is out at least for a week or so! Bummer!!! HeHe.... I wanted to see some pozzles! Oh well...

Oh, I got my silkie girls a man! He is white just like them, but I've been told that white is dominate and you can get other colors when white is crosses. We'll see... So to answer you question about silkie babies. You can plan to get them in about 2 months or so. The male is only 5 months old, so I think it may take him a bit to figure things out.

Take care all!

Good morning Arizona, rise and shine. After a cup of coffee or two. Then shine.

:gig:gig Is it too early to be stupid?

I may have to make my new pen area larger. After I took some more measurements of the playhouse/coop. Where I want to put it, does not allow very much room to get around one side of it. Changing my mind again. I will take a fresh look at the area today. Another problem is, one of my sons has an old VW bus he is storing at my house. Packed full of his stuff. I have no way of moving it to another location. Well, it is about 5' from the East end of the new pen. On the north east corner is a Misquite tree, small yet about 6' high. I was trying to make up my mind to have it inside or outside of the pen. Ah, a decision made yesterday. Tree outside of the pen. Now with a new set of measurements, in my hot little hand, I Have TO CHANGE MY MIND AGAIN!

I took a look at CL, just to see if there were any new playhouses listed. There was. I made an offer. Waiting for a call. If I get that one, for sure the new area needs to be bigger. I did tell my son, if he didn't move that bus, I would make a chicken coop out of it.

:lau:lau:lau I am not kidding. Wouldn't that be cute.
