Arizona Chickens

Boy, I must have been a little crazy yesterday. I posted the same thing 2 times.

Good Morning Arizona, It got a little hot yesterday. I was so into cooler weather. I had to turn the old AC back on. Bummer! I did get my laundry done, so that was a good thing. I have to get with it and get the house cleaned, before I go out and play with my chickens again. The guy did not call about the play house. It was gone this morning. Oh Well, another one will come along. Until then, I will keep working on the pen. I guess I will make it bigger than I had planned. I really don't want to do any work today at all. I just might be a couch potato today and watch old classic movies.

Sure hope everyone has a great day.

Rufus, I wish I could have seen that one. I always liked the 40's Plymouth. There are some really cute little kids car beds, that I thought might convert to a coop. I will keep looking for things. You just never know.

Angie, hope your DH gets the job. Payers:love

Morning all... Coop is cleaned, some house cleaning done, breakfast of scrambled eggs and some pistachios... I've got to go to the feed store... but I'm feeling lazy today.

I'm thinking of getting rid of a couple of my non-laying hens and buying a couple more from Vanessa.... guess I'll give the little lazy butts till Christmas and then they are history.

Larissa... Easy girl! I'm okay. Still sick, but alive! We ventured out yesterday because everyone was feeling better. So we went to Costco. Bad idea. I feel super crummy today.... Sigh... DH went to his doctor yesterday and he still has Broncitis. I'm not sure how long it will last, but he has had a full dose of antibiotics. We'll see...

Angie, you and your family will be in my prayers today. I know what you mean. My husband was a real estate agent about 2 years ago now and he was home for about 4 months doing nothing. Not a good time. But, things are much better now. Keep on trucking! Best of luck!!!

Welcome Blckbrnfamly! You will love this site and chickens. If you have any questions just ask, we are all willing to give our 2 cents!

Have a great day everyone!

I thank you all for your prayers!

CrystalGail I hope your family recovers from your illness' quickly.

Tonopah Pati take they day off, you deserve it.

I gotta go wash the chickens' dishes and give the dog a bath today. The dog starts his training tomorrow for my DS 4-H project, so he has to look and smell good, LOL.
Also, gotta cut my DS hair today, so he looks good and smells good, he he!

I hope everyone has a great day. I'll check in later.

Hello Everyone - I can't believe what we saw in our neighborhood last night! My husband and I went on a walk late last night (about 11 p.m) and heard some kind of rustling in a neighbor's yard. Then the creature started trotting across their driveway - we still couldn't make it out - just a shadow. DH thought it was a dog - I thought maybe a coyote, but the sound we heard of its feet tripping across the cement wasn't quite right. It then crossed the street in front of us - we were shocked to see that it was a javelina! More noises to our left - there was a second one. Needless to say, we decided to turn around and resume our walk in the other direction.

For those of you who know the Phoenix/Glendale area; We live in the CITY near 70th Ave & Union Hills - 1 mile from Arrowhead Mall. I've seen coyotes, quail, & rabbits before and I think a bobcat took one of our chickens a few years back, but I never expected to see wild pigs roaming the streets at night.

We do have a dry wash behind our house and that's where the first javelina headed after seeing us, but then it remembered its buddy and crossed the street again to follow javelina #2 down another road.

This morning I was letting the chicks out, and my son kept yelling "MOMOMOMOMOMOMOM"---not an uncommon sound from him. I can hear him running back and forth between the baby-gated doors, but he's not crying--- so I don't worry. Finally he runs to the door by the coop and yells,

"Mom! I saw a giant chicken! There's a giant chicken in the yard!"

"Yup," I replied. "The chickens are getting bigbig!"

"NO, I saw a giant chicken! It was sitting on the Mustang!"

Well, all the chickies were at my feet, so I walk around the house and HOLY CRAPOLA! There is a full-sized turkey sitting on the Mustang! I suppose the neighbor should trim those wings

I chased it back across the alley into it's yard, but so much for biosecurity. I suppose that explains the chick's attempts to crow a warning, and possibly my sick pullet. I am a little worried the turkey will come over before I let the dogs in, and I will be buying the neighbor a new bird. But it was great fun, and was cool for the boys.

Wow you live close to me in fact I think we mentionedthat to each other before..I am close to that wash, river or what ever they call it too...I have seen coyotes when walking the green belt but never bobcat or javelina and here I thought i was safety tucked in the city...If they hit my back yard my chickens are going to be gone.

By the way my buff and red started drinking from that water container with the rabbit type nipple on it... YEA!!

I live very close to 35th ave and Deer Valley Rd and there has been javelina spotted near us in the past but the other day while hubby was driving in the neighborhood he spotted what he thought at first to be a little lost chihuahua. He stopped his truck with about 4 other people and he was going to bring it home. Upon closer inspection it was a coyote pup!!! Didn't see mom or other pups only the one but thank the good Lord he didn't bring it home. We see all the regular desert dwellers around here quite often.

On a different note I have red sex link and gold sex link chicks running out my ears if anyone is interested. 9-9-09 is their hatch date.

( I am assuming you are talking about wooden coops) Well it does not rain a whole heck of a lot here so wood rotting is not really a big issue especially if you put a sealer coat on it and a good roofing material. It should last a real long time. As for chicks....all my chicks are from either Cackle hatchery or Ideal hatchery and
