Arizona Chickens

thanks for describing it all...sounds real nice... the pine wood shavings with poo in it will do good for gardens and trees, good idea....would love to see it sometime....is Tonopah a fun site name or where you live....

So I have a random question that maybe someone can answer... I have those Black Stars (I was told) but they don't look very "normal". They are really tall and have long necks. The kind of look like an Aseel!! Check out this breed in case you don't know what they look like - http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/Aseel-B19.aspx

They are all black though - the shimmery black that looks irridescent in the sun.

Any ideas??

You can find the Aseels on craigslist pretty regularly....but if you got yours from a hatchery, it is unlikely you got Aseels instead of blackstars. I will have to look at your older posts, but depending on their ages, your birds may just be in that "fugly" teenager stage.

Edited: got any recent pics? If you got them from Julie in Gilbert, they are probably not Aseels. The game cock/aseel look is pretty common in certain parts of the valley. Not that they ARE those types, but there is some "unregulated" breeding that goes on in some backyards

My first 12 chickes were straight-run from Julie...8 were roos! (May they crockpot up in peace) She was just setting up her breeding pens and I KNOW there weren't any with the aseel body type on the premesis.

I have been a few other places in the valley where the subject of chickens have come up, and someone has tried to sell me a fighting roo/hen. (I declined) A few years ago in my neighborhood, a family let their flock run wild and they starting attacking kids/dogs/pets. The roos in that flock had that "look". SO, even though we are NOT DISCUSSING ANYTHING FORBIDDEN BY OUR LOVELY, WONDERFUL, GRACIOUS WEB HOSTS, there are a ton of those birds around the valley. We need pics, yo.

My husband is a pilot, so he's down at the airport a lot, but..... it's usually very early in the morning and sometimes last minute. I'll have to pass and let someone else pick it up from you.

I have 3 black stars - 2 of them have a similar body shape to my barred rocks - short & plump - the other resembles our RIR in body type (black sexlinks are a cross between BRs & RIRs). The pullet that resembles the RIR has a longer neck than the other two, but not like the aseels.
These pics of my 3 BSLs are a few months old and don't show the necks well, but they do show the variation in colors (they have a pretty green sheen to them too):

Yeah, my neighbor raises Papillions, so it was a little worrisome. BUUUT- she had given one of her "reject" pups to my next door neighbor, and that little rat dog took out AT LEAST 3 of the crazy flock when they attacked him. He thought bad ace after that.

ArizonaDesertChicks - I get to work between 5-6 so if you change your mind, let me know. I wonder if that's all that I give them (the pellets) will they get hungry enough and just eat it?? I just want it gone, you know?

As for the birds, I will wait and see if they get nicer - they are ugly, for sure, but if they lay eggs like a sex link, then I will certainly keep them. Eggs and compost are my reasons for having chickens in the first place! I will have 4 light brown layers, a darker brown layer (maran) and an EE. I wish I had a white egg layer too - I saw some Leghorns on CL but they are already gone.

Alright here are your pics yo!

They are fuzzy - pics at dusk always come out weird on my camera but they give you a general idea. They are a lot more "leggy" and have longer necks than the others.

What do you think??
