Arizona Chickens

Hi, I'm delurking after checking out BYC for quite a while. I'm in Tucson. It is fabulous to join an online forum and actually see people from Tucson and the rest of Arizona. I hope to be checking back here often, looking for tips on raising hens in this heat. Off to go do my rain dance in hopes of an actual storm that produces rain.

I'm from N. Phoenix, but there are a bunch of folks on here from other areas. I like hearing about other areas in the state, preferably ones that have trees and are cooler

Nice to have you here!

Congrats on the draw!! We got drawn for mule deer in our favorite unit! Our son drew his first tag with us. We are beyond excited for him!!! Unit 8 is south of Williams, AZ. It's where I got my first deer and where my family has hunted for 60 years or more. My uncle and cousins are drawn with us, so we are super excited about it!

Nessa - so glad to hear from you!! I tried to call you a few weeks ago, but the number didn't work. Had a chicken question, but I got it answered. Glad to know that you are doing so well. Congrats on your successful smoking cessation!! Keep on truckin, girl!

Welcome to the newbies!

Laree - happy anniversary!

Update on my stupid broodies - the pullet gave up. She probably got tired of baking like a potato in that nesting box. The older broody looks half dead, but won't give up. Her comb is so pale. I tried to give her some cold watermelon yesterday, but she only took a few bites. I hope she makes it. The eggs looks to be ready to hatch soon.

Dog still afraid of rooster.

I know where unit 8 is...I have been hunting there too, it isn't far from me

I am sitting here waiting and waiting for someone to show up from Camp Verde.....they were suppose to be here an hour ago......I have so much to do that sitting here waiting is bugging me. I hope these people are ok....just tired of waiting

I have a friend in Laveen who lost 3 chickens to the heat last week so I'm giving her some of my girls.

She get's my Salmon Faverolle... bald back -- Geoffrey the roo's favorite.
my Black Star... lays so frequently, but I have to make room for the Ameraucana pullets.
my Cinnamon Queen... great layer I have two of her chicks... a roo and a pullet(I HOPE)
my CA white Legorn
and then I'm debating the Pearl White or the Light Brown that I saved from heat stroke last week. I think I'll give her the PW... sentimental attachment to the LB now.

By August 11th the juvies should be ready to go into the big coop at 16 weeks. I put the Blue Wheaten roo (the one I'm keeping for breeding) and the Blue Faverolle roo in the coop already, getting them used to the big girls.. I'll need to move the faverolle out before he becomes fertile.

My 7 marans girls have totally stopped laying unless I have egg eaters. I let them out of their pen for the first time in weeks to see how they'd do.

The boys did a great job sweeping and mopping the coop today.. Girls seem happy with the AC on ... they don't even venture out to the run until after 6PM when I go out and spray it down with cool water.

RUFUS... it is a HAND CART trek. So you know some who've done that before heh? LOL. I'm just taking two of my pair of hiking shoes that I go up Squaw Peak with. I just pray I don't get SOPPING wet during sleep time up there.

It's so MUGGY out there. We put out tarps and placed duct tape for mending on some of them that had obvious holes in them.

I started taking the Sunrider products on Wednesday... they are suppose to clean out your systems and allow you to "regenerate"...
well if diarrhea is part of the "cleansing process" it's working... I'm not taking anymore of those products until I get back from California now because I don't want to be irregular while on "vacation".

I know.... TMPI.....

Stay cool everybody!!

So I bought this new silkie today and I was told she is about 2 weeks old. I didn't notice her eye till I got home. Is this a problem or do you think she is probably sick. Is there a way to clean her eye to see if it comes back or gets worse? I am just not sure what to do and I hate for her to get the other baby I bought today sick as well if she is sick.

Any help would be great.

Just a suggestion to help keep the chickens cooler in this heat: When I turn them loose to free range on the lawn in the late afternoon/early evening, I turn the sprinkler on and let it run through the three stations. It wets the grass and gives them the chance to "cool their heels" and pick at the water drops. I think they must like it.

Congrats! I have an old 30/40 Krag deer rifle, I just need to run out to Cabellas and buy some ammo for it.... shot my first deer with it when I was 16. Guess I should start putting in... and see what I get. I have a friend that regularly draws for the North Kiabab and always comes home with a muley..

Definitely keep separate, check for breathing issues, whether the other eye has problems and whether there is any nasal discharge. I don't THINK it's lice/mites, but use a magnifying glass to check the bird all over--the bugs do sometimes congregate around the face.
