Arizona Chickens

Tell hubby we went for him.... but there were lots of other folks from AZ there... and that too was amazing.

Just to give you a tiny idea of how crowded it was... this is looking SE from the area where we were sitting to the NE of Jumbotron #2 on the north side... you can see the crowded WWII memorial in the distance on the east end of the reflecting pool.

Wow! That's a lot of people! We would have loved to go. Hubby won 8 tickets to see Hannity in Phoenix last summer. I think it was the freedom concert. I didn't go because we had just had the twins and didn't think it was a good idea to take them to such a big event so soon. He took the older two kids and some friends and loved it. They met the members of the Charlie daniela band. My daughter wanted to meet Miley Cyrus' dad. That's all she cared about. She was 7.

Try Marley Farms in Gilbert; they carry Purina, and it is not nearly that costly; shouldn't be too horribly long a drive if you take the Arizona Avenue cutoff rather than coming up I-10 the whole way. Or Rays Feed on Baseline in S. Phoenix; they carry Kelley. Those are probably the closest I can think of for you.

Just saw an email reminding me to go here so i wanted to say Hi. Things have been so crazy at work that I havent had much time for anything but work family and keeping the animals happy. All seems to be going well. My pullets still havent started laying yet for some reason. I think they should have already but since they all seem healthy and happy I guess maybe its just too hot for them or they aren't ready.

Hope everyone is well. I hope to have more time soon to be back on here more again.

Well back to work. You all have fun!

Shaun

Is the Kelley better than Purina?

We've always tried to feed them good, but the feed here is junk. I also give them melon and leafy greens daily.

After they begin getting better food, how long is a reasonable length of time to see improvement?

I don;t know anynone who thinks Az Feeds is even close to halfway decent. I drive to NW Phoenix to get Manna Pro. Kelley is a good feed; a couple of the folks in the club like it, and I've used it. It is more expensive than the Manna Pro or Purina, but not a lot. Call and ask prices and verify what all brands they have before driving that far. THey may carry other brands as well. Rays is well-stocked on poultry supplies and equipment; more so than most places. Marley's is very clean, kind of a country store boutique. Mostly horse stuff, but they do have some chicken supplies.

Western Ranchman carries AZ feeds and you are right. It's JUNK.

I've found that my bird lay just as well with Manna Pro as they do with Layena... and the Manna Pro at The Feed Barn costs less.

Can't wait to see how my FBCM roo is doing with the test hatch's that Vanessa is doing.

I'm having a tough day. It's like one thing keeps adding on top of another. To top it off I was nearly t-boned by a red light runner as I was turning left at a green arrow. As I pulled up to him at the next red light I was about to express my disapproval when it appeared to me he was really stressed out, so I laughed and smiled instead and said "I'm having a bad day, too." Hopefully that helped him to relax a little so he could drive more focused and safely. It helped me too, though I was really in the mood to chew someone out (it was going to be the apartment managers, but they were conveniently out of the office).

Anyway, I hope everyone else is doing better than I am!

But hey, at least I found the w-2s I needed to apply for a home loan. I have not given up hope and I refuse to! I'm determined I will be a homeowner by the end of the year, and next year will be chicken city!

My Mahonri eggs are hatching!!!!

At least, the polish mix one is! Half the shell is gone and I can see the face and wing and leg. The poor little chick is so squished into there that she* looks very uncomfortable.

*It had better be a "she" dammit.

The 2 silkie momma chickens are sitting with the egg between them so they can watch it hatch, and are both making little encouraging chicken noises every time the chick peeps.

Mahonri, I was so excited I wasn't paying attention. What is the polish egg probably mixed with?

I'm going to candle as soon as I can open the door. I'm hoping my light is powerful enough to see thru the shells. At this point I should be able to see development. I hope not to see blood rings.

I have chicks hatching now. It looks like 5 SLW and 1 EE so far. I'm hoping they all hatch. One silkie popped its first hole and one SLW hatch out in the wrong position. Kind of surprised me. The EE is a neat brown color. I got one in the last hatch that was the same color. I'm really fond of this color.
I'm really hoping the change in fan positioning stops drying out the eggs.
