Arizona Chickens

I've just been lurking lately, been in a cruddy mood, bad attitude, that kind of thing. Besides being busy with work for a change. Had Icelandics in the incubator and somehow 3 rolled out of their spot in the carton and cracked 3 others, so I went from 10 viable to only 4 hatching. Put me in a crappy depressed mood, and didn't want to infect anyone else. Moved the 5 week old juvies out to the porch in a brooder with a heat lamp, and in 3 days they have managed to smother 5.

I've opened it up now so they can come and go as they please since it's supposed to be warmer.

Lots of pretty eggs, and good looking chicks you guys have there.

Mahonri, your Icelandics look like they are doing very well.

I don't remember who had the hen with the hurt leg, but... check it very thoroughly for mites. I just had a naked neck that was doing the same thing, I thought it had a hurt leg, then another in the same coop started limping, turns out they have mites again.

I'm sorry to hear about all the losses to predators, again, I understand way too well the feeling. My heart goes out to you.

Did anyone see the news story last night about feral chickens south of I-10? They had lots of video of them running around and flying over walls, etc. Pretty funny.

Gallo, when you figure out how leash train your hens, let me know.

Turkeybreeder, I'm sorry to hear you are having health issues, and your family as well. My prayers go out for you.

Pastrymama, yes, if you wind up with turkey eggs I can incubate them for you. I was thinking of getting some myself to raise. Still on the fence about it.

Does anyone have a link to ideas for a nesting box setup for broody hens? I have several broodies and might as well let them do the hatching and raising themselves. Thanks

My chickens LOVE grape leaves! It really is one of their favorite things to eat.

Are you really going? I will be watching my 3 youngest siblings this weekend and told another friend no, but if you're making the trek out here, I will go. Let me know. Still got my #?

My chickens obliterate whatever they can reach. I've even seen them jump up to get what they can't reach.

Michele I have eggs for you... email me so we can coordinate.

So my baby belly is getting bigger and the cat thinks it's his own personal bed but between his shedding and my chapstick obsession, I can't have him all up in my face like that because hair gets stuck in my chapstick and it's just a big disaster. SO, he has to settle for laying very close to me and today laying close just wasn't enough. He had to be physically touching me. Thought you may get a kick out of this.

Bob, so sorry about your icelandic hatch.

I'm going to be hatching out more for Easter.

With only one roo and two pullets, I wouldn't make them very fast.

Cute cat Brit.

Todays been a long day. I dropped hubby off at the hospital this morning. He had his surgery. He was there about 6 hours. He thinks he was under for about 3 hours. I dont think it was that long. His belly button looks horrible in his opinion, but I think it looks great. He has 2 incisions on his ribs about 4 inches long where they took out a few had tissues masses. They used a glue to put him back together. He's not taken pain medication. He said if I can have an unmedicated csection recovery, he can do this. He's in pain. Poor guy. He had soup for dinner.

While he was gone I recleaned the brooder, took the flooring out and scrubbed it, changed all the quail trays. Scrubbed water containers, cleaned all the coops, moved the 2 roos I got from Mahonri to the back coop. I put them in the small pen cause I'm always afraid it will get too cold. I raked out all the coops and cleaned the goat pen and had a bad idea and took the goat in with me. I'm lucky I got her out in one piece. She got head butted and sent rolling across the pen them the mama goat was stomping her. I won't do that again

I moved my bucket chicks to the brooder coop and devided up the other chicks into bigger buckets so they would have more space. That's how I handle stress.
