Well, my children are learning about death very rapidly these days.

First, we got some bantams & the kids loved loved them. Then the next morning one was dead, then that afternoon another one died.

Then, I lost two of my pullets the other day. We moved & have had the chicks (8 weeks old) back in the brooder for transport purposes. DH was "supposed" to build coop for my little chickies 2 weekends in a row...did you all get that supposed to part? Yeah well, our awning failed us because of the ridiculous hurricane winds we get here and 2 of the pullets died. One other one was almost dead & I sat in the car with the AC on for about an hour to cool her off, then I gave her a cool shower & some wet crumbles.

My oldest daughter was super crazy sad when she got home & saw her favorite chicken was dead. DH wasn't too happy that 'his' chick was gone too.

Needless to say, I got a 'mini-coop' that very night.

Last night, my oldest daughter went to check on her snake - you guessed it, it was dead. But the other 2 snakes were alive & well.

She is a very sad little girl right now

So, if anyone has any pullets, I need to replace 2 of mine.

...I needed to get it off my chest.

I now have 6 Broody hens! 6 of them! That is almost 1/3 of my 21 hens.

Just in case someone here is looking for a broody, I just posted 1 on craigslist (I'm in Glendale, near 75th Ave and Union Hills). Even if she stops being broody when moved, she'll pick it up again - it seems to be her life's desire (she hatched from Mahonri's eggs late Feb in 2010 and this is her 4th time being broody)

"Pretty Ameraucana (Easter Egger) hen - $20 -- she is 14 months old --her father was a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana Rooster and mother was a Splash Ameraucana hen - Her eggs are a pretty blue/green color, but her big desire is to set on eggs and try to hatch them and she stops laying each time she goes broody. She has gone broody 4 times since fall (just started her 4th broody period) and should make a good broody for some one wanting a good mother hen. She is clean-faced (meaning no beard), but came from 2 pure ameraucanas" This hen is also a bit noisy when she's not broody and laying eggs - not the hen you want if you're keeping chickens on the sly.

Turkey Breeder --- I know you were looking for a broody, but I think you may have already found enough? Let me know if you are still looking.

Mahonri -- 4 of my chicks hatched from your eggs are broody right now - that is 4 out of the 6 Ameraucana pullets I kept!

So I got home from my run tonight and my husband tells me our RIR has most of it's tail feathers plucked out and it's all bloody. Apparently we've identified the low chicken in the pecking order. I found a large dog cage on CL so ran out to get that so we could isolate her until she heals (pretty sure she'd be super unhappy in our cat carrier). Since we only have 3 chickens, what is the best way to reintroduce her once she's healed?

DH read somewhere that you should pull one of the other two and put in with the isolated one for a day or two and then put them both back in and it's supposed to mess up the order?

Road trip! I have a beautiful FBCM 8 days old! Only one, he needs company.

Ooooooooh tempting. But i dont think my Mom will agree to driving all that way with gas prices the way they are just for a baby chick...

No kidding! Gas prices are ruining our spontaneous road trips

Hmmmm - for us it's little inchworms (centimeter worms?) that grow into little moths, and really love the wheat bran we use for mealworm bedding. They don't seem to need oxygen, either - last fall I sealed 10# of bran in one of those huge Ziploc bags intended for clothing, and now there are moths aplenty.

You could try switching to slices of carrots or potatoes for moisture. Less sugar = less fruit flies.

Yeah, changing to potatoes. Euuuu. How come I like worms just fine but flies gross me out?

Does that broody hen come with any Mahonri eggs under her? If so, I just might take her! I have been busting to have a few of those gorgeous birds!

I wish - but you could always add eggs later. Turkey Breeder sent me a PM and is considering (I am on the west side and may be too far). I actually forgot to finish posting my craigslist ad earlier and just now did that. My Blue Andalusian is listed too - not a broody, but a good egg layer. She picks out the feathers on a few of the more submissive birds (a few of my hens are looking like a rooster lives with them), but I think she would stop that if she went to a new flock and was lower on the pecking order (as the newbie).

TBall Chicky --
I"m sorry about your losses - so sad.
