Arizona Chickens

Just watched "Red Tails" - good movie.

Don't know what to do about Hoppy, her nose is cleared up but here eye is still a bit swollen and she closes it more often than the other.

Thinking of keeping her isolated for another day just to see what happens...

Also thinking of calling the state vet and finding out once and for all just what the heck is going on.

A bit sceeerd of the possible repercussions tho...

aww babies, My last batch that I let my hen sit on all died because of the extreme heat. Momma hen was such a good mother , she had all those babies tucked under her but sadly it was to hot out and all the babies dies under her what a aweful and sad sight that was. Not letting any of my hens go broody in this heat. all eggs are going to incubation instead.
That stinks im sorry.

Been gone awhile. Sorry to all with all the troubles. FUZZYBIRD: How is Bluebell? I am so very sorry that she is that sick. Mama Hen Chris+ So very sorry to hear about Daisy. How is she doing? Congrats to everyone with Eggs, new chicks and new additions!

You can call and ask for info. Find out which diseases they take your flock for. I think it is only Exotic NewCastle and Avian Flu. Both are horrid and you would want to cull anyway. But ask to make sure first.

I was reading that Avian pox can causes resp. symptoms....not sure about the eyes though. It doesn't sound too bad. Very few die from it and virus clears up in 2 weeks.

Quote: I think a lot of the folks in AZ use them. I put them up because of recommendations on this thread. The only fall back that I can see is you need to keep an eye on the wetness of your run. If it gets soggy and doesn't dry out on a regular basis, it stinks more and can lead to fungus/mildew/mold problems. When I first put them up, I had one going through coop windows....cutting right through the coop. That was a bad idea. Soggy bedding is really nasty. Now they are in a shady area in the run.

Well if they are put up right and working right they shouldn't get the ground wet. They shouldn't be to close together or dripping.

Thank you itsredcandy and John. She does mean a lot to me. Such a sweety. No one has answered my quetion on how long turkeys live. I looked up the fact on the internet and you won't belive all the differant answers! I get anywhere from 2-20 years!
One side made more sence tho. It said that 6 is a good old age and a turkey can live well up to then UNLESS the turkey has had a bad bout with worms or has had an infection in their life. Then more like 3 years.Well BlueBell has had a bad infection a year ago and it tried to come on again in her eye. I was able to cure it but now this. Blue Bell is over 3 I am pretty sure. The heat coming on at this time is not helping. I do mist her down along with the young turklets and hose off the coops ground. The birds in that pen are not panting at all. It has deep shade. My poor old Blue!
