Arizona Chickens

Hi I am new to having chickens. We live in Glendale, AZ. We have our coop under construction :) We have 6 chicks, 2 Rhode Island Reds, a Red Sex Link, a Black Sex Link, and 2 Ameraucanas. Does anyone have any advice about when they can go outside in our climate?

Welcome to BYC! How old are your chicks?

I have 2 questions. At night do you all leave a light on for your chickens in the coop? Also, when you feed them cantaloupe do you leave the seeds and pulp on? :)
Kris
Put light in coop in the winter to come on about 4 am as to keep production up. In the summer we get enough light.

If feeding whole, I cut in half and let them go at it. They will eat everything but the thing skin. If cutting up for myself, I give them the seeds, slime and rind. The love the slime and seeds then go for the flesh on the rind.

Holy torrential rain, thunder and lightening Batman.......at least it is over here around the 51 & T-bird!

poor Ladies are all crouched and huddled together in the coop making their soft "bwaaah" noises...

We had a good down pour here at Gaudalupe and Ellsworth.

Well, the problem is, we're only allowed to have a rooster if the rooster doesn't cause a 'noise disturbance'. I think the only way that we might have a problem is with the morning crowing, but my husband had already started building a cage to keep him inside at night (and more importantly, in the early morning), so I think we should be ok.  The really annoying thing is that we were already doing this, and would have TOLD them we were doing this, if they'd bothered to talk to us and work out a solution like reasonable people, instead of calling animal control.

 Oh yeah keep him,
You are doing it all right!! We all have one or two annoying,
irritating same as you " do nothing" kind's in our neighborhood...
We have told all of our neighbors about our chickens..
Plus if ours turn into roo's we told them we would rehome
them... Some people just don't know how to communicate.

What do you think they would say if you went and knocked
on their door and asked them if the roo is disturbing them.
Of course,
In a nice way with fresh eggs and smile.. They might be
Dumbfounded.. Since they have no neighbors that like them.
Well keep us posted..

Welcome to the board. I think typically they say when they are feathered out. I would personally put them out at about 4-6 weeks this time of year as long as they have a fully enclosed run/coop. Otherwise I'd keep a close eye on them if let to go free range until they are about 10+ weeks. Even then, they may need help finding the coop at night. I have 4 month old Frizzles that I have to put in the coop every night. They sleep in the nesting boxes. Not to happy about that as I have to scoop poop every morning.

We are having the BEST monsoon ever. Rain almost every day or every other day for the past week. It's POURING outside right now.

Blue sky here in East Mesa. It's been a great Monsoon. These storms are very productive in the moisture. I've seen better lightening storms but I'll take the rain. This 73 degrees this morning is awesome.
