ARKANSAS Chicken or Eggs SWAP

My poor little head is throbbing -- there are too many breeds of chickens!!! Most of them are too cute. I am bound and determined to find one breed and stick to it. I will not give in to the temptation of having five or six different chickens.

I am however, mentally preparing myself that i might have to start off with chicks. This idea gives me the heebie jeebies, but I'm getting a lot of information and encouragement, I'm testing the idea in my pointed little head. i just don't want to be responsible for them dying by any means other than a full a full grown roaster, fryer, etc.

I have read about cochins and they, too seem like a good chicken. I'm not in love with black. My goal is to have good layers who are good mothers and will be a decent size meat chicken. I don't really care what color they are which is why I'm open to the blue/black/splash flock.

I will admit the idea of rare breeds does appeal to me as well.

Everybody have a Happy Saturday!!!

you can't go wrong with any breed. you just need to determine what you are really wanting them to do. you mentioned that you want a decent size breed for meat, good mommas etc well then if that is the case i would stay away from bantams. now i will say that i do have two cochin bantams-man are they cute and they crack me up!! i have production reds-layers. man are they are laying machines, very pretty and really cool feather patterns. i have mixed breeds within the layer family. i got them from a hatchery and have had not a bit of issues with them. i wanted mine to be able to be laying machines, which they are! i found that i really enjoyed watching them develop into adult birds because i didn't know what they were going to be, and when they started laying i didnt know what my eggs were going to be. it was and still is a lot of fun!

if you want some that are laying, plus will at times go broody, and for meat. look at rhode island reds/hampshire reds. cochins (they come in standard size fowl, many different colors, good size birds) orphingtons, white leghorns ( any leghorns, standard size and lots of different colors) marans ( standard size, laying machines, many different colors)

there are so many to choose from, so as said you can't go wrong with any breed. i will also say if you don't want any surprises and possible issues you might want to think about getting from a breeder that breeds towards sop, and not go with a hatchery. now i got mine from a hatchery and have had no issues, i know many that have and had no issues, also know many and they have had nothing but issues. you can go with a wonderful breeder and end up with an odd ball or two-anything is possible. but trust me when you get them to your house and start to care for them you will love them in no time. even if you end up with an odd ball you will still love them.

good luck with your quest! never hesitate to ask anyone around here, they are wonderful people!

Here is a pics of the roo I'm letting go. He has some white as you can see in his tail feather. If you ever wanted to show him as I understand white is a DQ. I dont show any of my birds but am trying to breed towards the standard for those who might. I don't keep him in the pen with my hens that sell hatching eggs from. I have him in with some of my cull welsummer hens and other barnyard hens (thats were I get my eating eggs). Otherwise good looking rooster, I have thought. He came from good stock and a really dark egg also. His shanks are yellow just bad lighting and a cell phone pic. I also have a 3 month old roo that I was considering keeping but would let go also. I'll see if I can post a pic of him also in a little bit.
My rooster is doing the same thing. All of a sudden, there is one white feather! He has fully feathered shanks and is the best rooster I have ever seen. Now, he wants to go and get a white feather! I don't know what to think. I am searching all over the place for a couple of hens to put with him, but have hit a wall so far. I have 4 Australorps that have been with him and my little banty hatched out 4 of those eggs. Three of those 4 have feathered legs. It will be interesting to see the eggs.

I have a dozen hatching eggs ready to go! $3.00 an egg/$36.00 a dozen. I have production reds/olive eggers/cochin banties. I also have a gold lace polish rooster that needs a good home-$5.00. I will ship eggs if you would like. Contact me here or you can call me 870/834/5706.

You looking for standard or bantys? I have 2 extra black banty roosters.
Tony,
I was looking for LF. I found an Ameraucana rooter today.
Thanks for asking.

I might still be interested in a LF Araucana for the right price and not have to drive too far for it.

I'm looking for a couple silver laced wyandotte roosters. Had a predator problem last fall and lost my only roo. I'm the only person in the world who orders straight run and gets one male...
I ended up with hens only and have some people wanting chicks this spring. I would be willing to drive a little ways if the price was right

As much as you may not like it eventually you will give in and have more than one breed

this is y i love Black/Blue/Splash u can have 3 colors in your flock but still have a pure breed... i think u are on the right path with only one breed... i have about 12 breeds and that is just 2 many... if u dont want to raise baby chicks most breeders will raise them for u for a few weeks or months... i have seen ppl charge 25cents per bird per week for the 1st month and then 50 cents per bird per week for the second month... some may charge more or some may just tell u a price for a bird at each age...

u are on the right track keep plugging along u will get there...
