ARKANSAS Chicken or Eggs SWAP

Yeah I don't want white feather genes in my birds. I do sell a lot of hatching eggs. Some of my buyers intend to show and I know white is a DQ in showing. I don't get too caught up in all the do's and don'ts of showing and SOP but I want to sell good quality stock so that people have the option to show if they like. I'm mainly breeding for egg color anyway. But I have heard that you can pull the white ones out and sometimes they grow back dark. But I'm not going to do that.

. Here is the 3 month old roo

I understand. , I can't use him either. I do have the 3 month old roo also. I have considered keeping him for a replacement of the white tailed one. I did just hatch off some babies a few weeks ago and have some roos in that group that I can keep later on. Can I ask what line your Welsummers are? I'm always looking for good stock and/or new blood to throw in with mine for improvement.

I have Channing Grisham line birds they are nice but I am at a point I need to introduce some new blood into the line to keep it going. I have hatching egg's and chicks normally year round but they are slow right now and trying to get all my fall birds hatched out is taking a little longer than anticipated.

Hello Everyone!!! I'm signign my paperwork for my mini-farm today for I am officially chicken shopping!!!

I don't feel confident enough to raise chicks ( I'm definitely not trying to hatch eggs) so I would like to try to find a starter flock. My first thought whne I decided to raise chickens was a Black Australorp flock but somebody (Mr. Hall) has me interested in possibly having an Orpington flock.

Since I like both breeds I'll let the decision be a divine appointing. If anyone is willing to part with a "starter flock" (3 or 4 hens and a rooster) of either Black Australorps or Blue Orpingtons, or I don't mind getting one or two from different farms. I am in Hot Springs and I am willing to pick up from just about anywhere but if it's further than two hours, (you might need to let me have some couch time

I don't want to get both breeds right now, I am only going to start with one of them. I want to get my feet wet before I take on a managing different breeds. I am looking for to the full size birds, not the bantams.

On the Orpingtons, as long as there is a blue roo and a blue hen, I wouldn't mind if the pother hens were black or splash.

THANK YOU !!!!

btw, the coop will be ready the first week of March.

Folks, I will be in the parking lot at The Marketplace, HWY 425, Monticello Saturday morning selling some stuff. Feel free to drop by and visit. Will be in a small red Mazda pickup with black trailer. Too many things to mention. We will have a nice rear tine tiller plus some birds and buck rabbits.

I have a nice flock of giant black cochins if you dont find what you are looking for, love the quote and verse's on your page.

So happy for you getting your farm. News flash.... there is no such thing as a mini-farm! Mini-farms tend to grow and before you know it you are gathering eggs, milking goats, spinning wool, harvesting vegetables......

Check with your Cooperative extension office about becoming a Master Gardener. They have a 4-6 week course that will teach you how to garden.

As much as I would like to get you started with Orpingtons, you may want to consider John's Cochins. If you added a Blue rooster you would still be able to use the Blacks. The Cochin is very similar to the Orpington, just fluffier. Its about the same size. However, the Cochin has feathered shanks and feet. I have seen John's Cochins and they are very nice! You would be very happy with them.

Here is an artist conception of a Black Cochin and a Black Orpington for a comparison.

Why not start with chicks? Its fun, they are easy to care for. They do not need a coop for at least 4 weeks after hatching. We take ours from the incubator to a brooder tote. We install a lower hot water tank thermostat with a lamp kit to create the Brooder Tote. Would take me about 5 minutes to build you one. Below is what they look like. Folks brood their chicks differently. We also have a small rabbit hutch that I installed a thermostat and heat lamp in. The outside is covered with plastic rug runners.

Notice that all of these brooder tote photos were taken in our living room. Oh, I am not Mr. Hall.... I am Jim!

Also, all chicks in these brooder totes are Orpingtons.... Buff, Black, Blue and Splash.
