Arkansas folks speak up.........

My dad I went deer hunting with our friends several years ago in the "Smackover Bottoms." That is the on;ly time I have ever deer hunted with hounds.
My dads buddy passed away about a year ago. I know their kids still live East of Stepehens.

Pretty much, looking to build some pens and put some coops out there. I'd like a spot somewhere close to a building so that coyotes, etc. wouldn't be so keen on eating my birds!

Buckguy, I cleaned out my mailbox. Sorry about that!

Welcome Rooster! I'm just about 30 or 40 miles from you. Yes, the heat has been terrible around here. Most of my chickens have plenty of shade, but I have a few pens that are getting more sun than I'd like, so I'm working on another run that will lead them into a shadier area. Now if I could just figure out a way to not have to water the garden every day!

I had another weird snake encounter Thursday night. My daughter was getting out of the shower and yelled to me that there was a snake in the bathroom. I opened the door to find her wrapped in a towel, standing on the toilet! She said it's right there behind the door, so I peeked around it and saw a nearly two foot long copper head on a few items of clothing. I'm starting to think I'd like living in town! The dogs killed a big water moccasin (spelling?) recently in the back yard too. I don't know what to do about them.

To help snake proof in an organic manner you might try this trick. I have to say this is second hand info, I have never done it, but I know people who have - they say it works. You make a barrier with DE around your house, barn, garden, or whatever a few inches wide. Supposedly it irritates the snakes when it gets between the scales so they won't cross it. I think that it's just a new version of an old favorite. The older method my grandmother swore by was crushed moth balls, you sprinkle it the same way. It's not organic, but might be cheaper if DE is hard to come by in your area (it is in mine). I would think both would need to be reapplied after rain. Also there are some commercial snake repellent products out there like this one http://www.spray-n-growgardening.com/prodinfo.asp?number=SNAKE

Probably better that all of those, maybe you could find a mongoose breeder and add that as family pet

Thanks Scot. I'm going to see if I might find the Snake Stopper around here or Hot Springs next time I go so I don't have to pay shipping. I haven't found DE here, but I believe I might can get the feed store to order it, so I might try that too. I've heard it's good to have around for other things too, like adding to the chickens dust bath area to help control mites and lice, and adding to feed to deter bugs, and even to help control internal parasites.

Having the dogs in the back yard has helped to keep them out of the house in the past, but somehow this one got through.

I use DE alot. I add is to the feed for the birds, my dogs, and we even put it in our fruit smoothies. Not sure if it is really doing anything, but it does not hurt. I also sprinkle it in the coop on all flat surfaces, it really helps keep down smells and flys. I also sprinkle it on ant mounds and use it like sevin dust on the garden. It really does kill the bugs. Now with the powder a little goes a long way. I could not find it locally and had to order it online. I ordered it last August and I have about half the bag left. At the time it cost me $15 + $20 shipping. Looks like the price has gone up, I just looked and now the same place has it for $25 + 20 shipping. I would still buy it for that price though since it lasts so long. I really with I could find it locally though. I use the food grade perma guard brand. Hope you can find some. If you do let me know where

I still think it would be cooler if you got a mongoose though

My husband and I went fishing this morning ( we are camping on Petit Jean Mountain) and a snake tried to help itself to our stringer of fish. The stringer was almost right under his chair. We both stood up and backed away but left our chairs, tackle and poles on the bank. Then the snake ( i think it was a cotton mouth he says water snake:rolleyes:) crawled UNDER the chair my husband was sitting in and hung out for a while before he disappeared.

I've never seen such an aggressive snake before. Snakes are normaly very happy to stay out of sight. Wonder why everyone has seen so many this summer?
