Is this your first dobie? I've had 8. Three of them started out as chicken killers but were quick to learn that wasn't a good idea. You should pick up the chicken next time and explain that they are BAD!
Even if he wasn't responsible it is good for him to understand.
Mine does the same thing with the hands, she also leans, hard, and if all else fails, nibbles the hair on your arms. If you lean down to tie your shoe etc.. you are instantly given a kiss. They are just the best dogs.
I also have a Westie, who is the total opposite, and amazingly a great dog also. Then there is Bette, who is the strange accident that happened between the two. Amazingly, affectionate, obedient like her mother, but a digger, barker, and fun creator like her Dad.
I'm going to put a story on about the westie, Duff, and his adventure with a flying mouse.

Yes. He's my first. My bro buried the chicken bfore I got home. And we haven't found anymore dead ones. Hopefully it's the last. I took him on his first wAlk ever on a leash Saturday and he did great. Didn't pull or anything. My lab would almost choke himself pulling so hard. I'm really happy with him. I'll post pics when I find my battery charger.
Farmers in Benton has DE and I'm sure if they have it than Farmers Assn on Cronial Glen has it too. They run out sometimes in Benton so if you drive call before you come.
Jarhead... How long have they had it? I know LR did not have it last August. The guy was looking through the computer and told me the closest he could get was sweet pdz. Do they have it listed by another name - like permaguard instead of just DE? Next time I need some I will call and ask.

Oh my gosh! Do you know how it got in the house? How did you get it out? I've heard that if you have a gap somewhere that the snake or rodents can get in, you can stuff it with steel wool or one of those copper scrubbies and they won't even try to get past it.
It probably got into the house under the side door. The metal threshold thingy came loose a few weeks ago when the brick underneath cracked and broke loose. My dad has a new door frame and bricks he's bringing out this week. He's a brick mason. I really need a new door too, so I hadn't bothered putting in a new metal thing yet. I'm going to wait until the new door frame is in. I'm pretty sure the snake slithered under the door and came right in. The dogs had barked at the door just shortly before that, but I thought they were barking at each other since the food and water is close to that spot. I have something stuffed underneath the door now, lol!
It was definately a copperhead though. I did try to think of a way to get him out unharmed, but the way he was behind the door, I couldn't really get to him to try and trap him. I tried to lift him out with a metal broom handle, but then he slithered off of it and across the room and into a rabbit cage that has our two pet bantams in it! Poor things, they froze, scared to death! I opened the cage door to let them out but they wouldn't move. I used the broom handle to get them out. One of them has a crippled foot and that's why she lives in the house, so she doesn't get picked on by the big chickens (the other bantam is her best bud and keeps her company...they're spoiled rotten), but let me tell you, she was hobbling on that crippled foot pretty darn fast and cackling the whole way down the hall! Unfortunately for the snake, he got in between the cage and the wall and just wouldn't come out, he was mad and ready to strike.
Luvarabhorses... I'm not scared of non-poisonous snakes either. In fact, my daughters think that the king snakes and ring neck snakes are "so pretty", lol! I use hardware cloth to keep the snakes out of the chicken pen, so they're more than welcome here, and do a nice job of keeping the rats in the field and garden under control.

Every time I am weedwacking I have to watch closely and move at least 1 or more snakes from getting hurt. I have unintentionally killed several on the riding mower when the grass gets a little high. I don't mind them being around since they take care of the rodents. Our most prolific species that I see at least is king snakes. There are a couple of huge ones. We also always see dead king babies
in the spring on the driveway that just don't make it away from cats and birds, but at least we know we have a breeding population. I like having the kings around since I know they control the venomous ones - I watched a large king snatch a copperhead one day while I was sitting on the porch. It was like watching the discovery channel "live". When the kings are in the way I can just reach down and pick them up and move them, just like someone would a pet python. They are very gentle. Never had any chicken or other critters get taken or bit by any snake. So they are welcome here.

DE is also know as Diatomaceous Earth
