Arkansas folks speak up.........

I asked for it at the LR farmer's by DE, diatomaceous earth, perma guard - the guy said he had no idea what it was. He looked in the computer of the inventory and had someone else who works there come help. Both of them said they don't have/can't get. Then they asked what it was for, I told them and they said hydrated lime will do the same thing! That's when I told them I wanted something safer that could be eaten and not harmful, so they said sweet pdz. What a bunch of morons! I stopped by that store in Benton before and it is way nicer than the one in LR. I guess I will start going there instead.

I bought it here in Benton at the Farmers Co-op. I only bought a small one gallon bucket of it for around $5-6 dollars. I know that by standards that's a pretty high price to pay for it, but I don't have a gajeellion chickens and I like to add it to their food and and use the Sweet PDZ to mix in their bedding in the coop.

I found the DE over by the fertilizers and things on the top shelf. If you walk in the store, it's on the right hand side about 4 rows back.

Absolutely it is food grade. When I purchased it, I made sure that it was. The man that owns the co-op was telling me all about a seminar that he went to where there was a guy showing the DE and he sprinkled it on a hamburger and ate it. He told me that he puts it in his dog's food to ward off worms and other pest, and he uses it in his garden as well. I sure wish they sold bigger amounts of it though..suppose if I were to ask him, he might.

The 50lb bag I ordered online filled a 20 gallon trash can to the top. 20 gallons would be $100 at the feed store at $5 a gallon. It works out to half that price getting it online even with shipping if the feed store only has the small size available. I am guessing a 50lb bag will last me 2 years, since I have had it almost a year and have used about half. I don't mind storing it, it keeps forever. I plan to check them out though.

Well this is the place. I would do a Google search and 1/2 the time it would bring me here. So I decided to join. I've been answering questions about which varmit rifle people use for predators.

I kept reading different things on here but needed to reply or at least interact so we finally joined up. We have a mixed method for pedators Box traps in the coop, leg holds on the roof of the coop. Firearms are the easy choice. Most of the coyotes I get are from the cab of the tractor, they don't seem to be afraid of the tractor so I just drive as close as possible usually under 35 yards and take them with a S&W 686 .357, If they are out a bit sitting under a shade tree I have M77 in .243 that has a tuned cryo barrel thats petty good to 300+
I have a few wildcats in things like .25 remington rimmed .218 bee 219 zipper etc. In the end most of the coons fall to some old .22 pump rifles. I just seem to have a lot of coons here.

On coop design... Raised floor type or dirt floor? We hope to have 50 plus layers when we work out the issues. Any input in this area would be appreciated.

Well...I'm having a bitter-sweet moment. I placed an ad on Craigslist to give away my excess roos. My teen cuckoo marans that I hatched from Roche's eggs need to come out of the coop. They've not set their little feet on the run floor yet. I tried to introduce them, but Duffy tried to beat them up. Duffy is such a mean little turd.

Anyway, I've had a motherlode of response from my post. Tomorrow a man will come from Sheridan and pick up what roos I have left. He is going to present these roos to both his and his brother's flock of ladies. I also had a lady respond who has a guy friend who is looking for an EE roo and I just happen to have a few of those. I told her I would hold one back if she promises that he will come and pick it up tomorrow.

I am keeping Buddy (formerly Betty the Beautiful Bitty). Buddy is not my prettiest of the EE roos, he's actually a buff color, but he has beautiful olive green legs and muffs and a beard. He's oh so very, very sweet. I am his number one chick. He clucks everytime I say his name or talk to him and he fancies himself a lap chicken. He's a gentleman. I've experienced the mean roos and ended up hating them, now I'm going to see if Buddy will keep his promise to stay a good boy.

I'm sorta sad. I hatched these babies from De's eggs...this was when I got to drive out and meet Amanda. This is my first ever hatch and I know that I'm going to cry when they leave. I'll have six pullets and Buddy left of the 10 that I raised. I have to do it though. I have to get those cuckoo's out in the run. Duffy is the only one that has prevented me from doing this. Lately he's been picking on some of the other kids as well. But since that initial attempt, 2 others have started to crow. I'm afraid they'd be as mean to the toddlers as Duffy is.

Bye bye baby roo's!

At least I chose from those who don't intend to eat them!
