Arkansas folks speak up.........

I just bought 50# of DE yesterday at Farmer's Association on stagecoach road for about $60. He said you want a whole #50? I explained I had chickens and a garden. One guy knew what it was for but didn't know if they had it, the other guy knew they had it, but didn't know what it was for. It is a feed additive, not the swimming pool stuff.

THAT'S A HUGE MARK-UP! It is $45 online for a 50lb bag for permaguard food grade DE, which includes $20 for UPS shipping . I understand selling it for a little more locally than online, but the place that I get it from online is a feed store in another state, and their price is $25 a bag if you pick it up at the store. I guess in our area they can charge what they want since they are the only ones who have it. I just find it wrong to mark it up that much.

I would shop around before I bought.
It is said that the Farmers Coop in Hot Springs sales it 50lbs for $35. I picked up a 50lb bag up at my feedstore for $20

Someone had ordered it about 5 months before and never picked up, so they wanted it gone.
My MIL picked up a 50lb bag at one of the coop in Benton (I think) and paid $80 for the bag

So it would be wise to do some price checks before you bought.

On coop design... Raised floor type or dirt floor? We hope to have 50 plus layers when we work out the issues. Any input in this area would be appreciated.
Ty & Pam

Phil and I just built a chicken coop. We used 4x4's as the base and made it so we could slide it around, we have a large area so we don't really have to clean it out. It cost us $100 total to make because we had left over 2x4's, 4x4's and some cedar siding from another project. It's 10x10 and holds about 60-70 chickens. I'll post some pics in the coop part and put the link here in a minute if you want some ideas.

I see you were quoting me...I was thinking "cool, someone else found this site using Google...then....the post looked very familiar, all of the first paragraph anyway....then I thought it was a bogus post....that someone just copy and pasted my post...but after reading the rest of the post I saw they was no attempt at a SCAM. And you knew way too much about firearms to be a Scammer. I just see all kinds of weird stuff on the internet....Scams and con artists...but then I saw where you say you "hosed the quote"

I have all kind of firearms... .22 Ruger, 12 Gauges, .17 HMR, 25-06, 30-06, and a Taurus .40 cal. I think the .17 HMR would be the first thing I would recommend to any beginner...it's powerful enough for coyotes and has no recoil and will not blow your ear drums out. So anyone I feel can handle it comfortably. And it's alot faster than a .22 and hits harder. I like my 25-06 for coyotes personally. I have a coon dog to watch over my chickens so I haven't had the chance to try anything out on coons yet. Ever since I bought my .17 HMR in 2006, I've hardly even touched my Ruger 10/22.

Hey Cogburn, Sorry for the confusion, All is good. Years ago I had a gunshop in Praire Grove Did lots of military evals got a degree in Design and function. Its just a trade that has nearly been legislated away. Off my soapbox now anyway I love the .17 except for price of shells. Its very easy to reline several of the older .22 single shots like the stevens or the marlin .22 mags. I can almost reload some centerfire stuff with cast gas checks cheaper.
I'm about 30 miles south of fayettville on the OKlahoma line bout 12 miles from westville OK, way out in the boondocks. I am blessed that my wife and I live on the farm I grew up on, But it is a lot of work. We have an occasional bear. By occasional I mean that occasionally he shows up and scares me half to death. Not really dangerous he just suprises us every now and then. I don't know where hector is but I suspect a bit north and east of me.
We're still pondering design. it seems that in the smaller coop (currently 8x10) there is a lot more fighting among the 25 5 month old RIRs so I was thinking bigger maybe 20x20 with a creek gravel floor. Can a coop be to big? or to small? I fenced about 1/2 acre that has the small coop and a 20x15x6high chain link covered with garden fence gated to the open yard. Some protection some open yard. There seems to be an excessive amount of feathers on the floor in the coop and I've seen mice inside... hmmmmmmm

Wow! What a crazy chicken night!

First I sent away my excess roos. Buddy (formerly Betty) was whooped by Duffy, who turned out to be a real turd, and wouldn't even come out of the coop. Buddy being my favorite roo and the one I kept. As soon as the excess roos were gone, Buddy came out pounding his chest! He started straightening the hens out and letting them know that they all belonged to him...including me. Buddy tried taking me on and bit me when I scritched his chest like I always do. So of course I picked him up and straightened him right out. I have a feeling I'll have to straighten him out a lot. I told him that he better tighten up cause there's always craigslist. He chilled right out then. Then I scritched one of the other pullets on her chest and she latched onto my hand and would not let go! I had a nice little round white bite mark to show for that.

THEN I went to round up my rangeing hens. Nobody wanted to cooperate. Nobody wanted to go inside the run, my guiding stick didn't even work tonight. So I grabbed up one of the mamas to the the two baby chicks and tossed her in the run and then went back and snatched up the chicks and when I popped them into the run, that mama flogged me and hard! It took me a good 30 minutes to get my 6 big girls back in the run. Two in, one out, two more in two more out...

Crazy. But hey, I only have one roo now! I think.
