Arkansas folks speak up.........

Congrats! We have a barred rock named Agnes, I call her aggie. She is an excellent layer, never slows down in the winter. Plus she is super friendly. You will enjoy yours I am sure

Hi Urban Dreamer,

Congrats on your new chicks. I'm impressed that you built the coop BEFORE you got the chickens! By the way, I have a Barred Rock rooster named Rocky. (very creative name huh?) He's great, he has a baritone crow and it's beautiful to listen to. (at least I think so) Anyway, I'm in a very rural are & it doesn't matter.

Enjoy your chickies!

Since Im new to this I didn't want to start off with chicks. The barred rocks I got are 2 years old each. I know that egg laying decreases with age but Im not confinent enough yet to raise chicks. I need something with a little experience ... Im 99.9% sure they are hens, neither one has spurs and they are both said to be good layers. We'll wait for a crow to be sure.

Urban Dreamer - My BR is also about 2 and she still lays very well. If you want some young birds I have 18 eggs in the bator due to hatch mid Oct. They are Egyptian Fayoumi and gold laced Polish. I would be happy to let you have a few to help you get a start. If you want a few, we will grow them out for a few weeks to get them past that first stage of development for you. Then you can drive the few minutes to get to NLR and take some home

Welcome Urban!

I am way north-west of you in Hector. Chickens are great!!! You will have a lot of fun with them. They have kept me fascinated since I was a little girl.

Phil and I built a chicken tractor of sorts in that it was on wheels.
We moved it for the first time about 20 feet away. I love chickens but I was very amused when they had a hard time "finding" it when nightfall came. Most of them gathered on the spot where it used to be. We carried them over to the door and when they went in side they were doing the cautious BAWK...BAWK...BAWK sound, not entirely sure it was the same house.

It was just as funny when a year later we built a new bigger house and tried to move them into it. I closed the door of the old house and threw food into the new house. Several of them were flying kamakaze style into the door of the old house. That actually took several days for them all to accept. : )

LOL luvarab that is a hilarious story about moving the tractor and then again moving them into a new coop. I can only imagine the confusion those poor chickens must have felt!

I always think it's funny when we decide to move the teenagers out of the garage and they all try to get back in for days. They all pile right up against the door at night for days. Truly creatures of habit

How funny. They found the roost just fine but they seem to be blind to the the coop itself. Thier still scared Im sure so Im not going to push them. I am happy. They have pleanty of room to run around and as soon as Im more confinent and build a bigger coop mabey I'll hit Jarhead up on that offer. Im so happy Im not alone in this. My hubby and father in law are more fussy about the chickens than I am. Zach asked me to go and check on them last night becasue he was having those "parental feelings". LOL they were just fine. Its gonna be so funny when we have kids if he is this silly about our chickens already!

Just let me know if you want any. We love helping get folks established in the hobby, so we are happy to gift birds when we have them.

Even if it is just one so it would fit in the small coop with your girls. The polish look pretty funny with those top hats, makes for good conversation as most "average folks" (aka non chicken people) have never seen a chicken like that

Here is a pic of one (not mine but one of the breeders hens I got the eggs from):
