Arkansas folks speak up.........

I was watching the Fine Living Network (FLN) today and they had a show called Freakiest Festivals on. I learned that Mountain View has a bean and out house festival. Who knew? I feel like I 've really been missing out.

A day of eating beans and watching grown men race outhouses! Good times!

Got my new gutters put up today. Also hung a mailbox on our new fence so the mailman will deliver again. Poor guy's scared of our giant, tail-thumping Lab

But really I'm padlocking the gate and putting the box out there anyway. Tired of door-to-door sales and church people.

I was off today, and so was my father in law (aka my helper) and it was WARM and SUNNY!!!!!!!! I felt like

and I felt really productive for a change! I love feeling productive!

Oh, and I think I have noticed the most interesting trend. My new, 22 week old cockerel is taking over the flock from my almost-1 year old RIR rooster! I didn't think roosters considered themselves "old" before their first birthday, but Ole Red doesn't seem to mind the youngster flirting with his ladies and doing most of the crowing! I thought he might at lest put up a fight, but this seems to be a relatively peaceful take-over. There are a few marks on the combs that happened since I mixed the 2 age groups, but no noticeable bloodshed.

Well in my limited experience, they probably won't kill each other. If it happens I'll just have to clean them up.

I have been TOYING with the idea of getting rid of Mr Red coz DH doesn't like him, BUT, I also kinda want to use him for sex-link chicks SO he might be looking at a honeymoon hotel type situation, which would keep the roos separated nicely. I also have the back and front yards fenced separately now so that could also be useful.

OH NO!! IF ANYTHING HAPPENED, IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND!

OLE RED IS NOT IN THE COOP TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CANT FIND HIM ANYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!

Doug said maybe he ran away in shame

I couldn't find any red feathers in the yard with my flashlight, and the BSL cockerel (he needs a name I guess) didn't have any signs of blood or fighting.
If somethin got him it didn't leave a trace that I could find, and Red was a fighter, good flock protector which is why we kept him. Anything that didn't leave a pile of feathers or a body behind was either two-legged or flew in, though of course I'll check more closely in the daylight. Would be odd if if our first loss to a hawk took our biggest, heaviest bird

oh no! I hope you find him this morning. Hopefully you just missed him while out looking. I've missed a chicken while doing a head count at night before. Shown the light right over her, cept she had roosted in the wrong pen. Found her mighty upset the next morning when she woke up not knowing where she was.

Poor ol Red. Poor guy! Stinking little whipperschnapper comes along and steals his girls. He should sue for alienation of affection.

Not sure where he slept last night (I checked all the fences and low-hanging branches) but this morning at 8 oclock he was in my neighbor's back yard. Great, he'll stay close to the others I thought (escaped hens always do) and went back to bed, so I could sleep in on my day off. Ha Ha Ha
After I got dressed and went out he was gone again! Me and DH walked around the neighborhood and DH found him about 5 houses down, at the "cat lady's" house, surrounded by cats no less. They came out in their PJ's to watch me catch him!
Unfortunately, he tried to flog my FIL the other day so I just recently gave him an attitude adjustment. Instead of coming up to my legs, he kept his distance from me. I was finally able to grab him by one leg and maneuver him into the "football hold" where he was calm until we got to our gate. As soon as he knew he was back home he wanted down NOW. lol
First thing he did was run over and claim Penny, the black sexlink pullet. Now I KNOW she's about to lay if the experienced rooster is after her. When I went to lock up tonight, Mr. Rooster was in the coop as he should be. He was sleeping next to Penny instead of his old flame, Queenie. Maybe Queenie is being bumped out of the #1 rooster's favorite position. Might be a good thing cos she was about to need a hen saddle, but they were best buds so I dunno how she's gonna feel about this.

Talk about a soap opera in my back yard!!!!!!!
