Arkansas folks speak up.........

I'm gonna have to do something with this next generation because mine is now the father of these.. I guess I could just buy eggs or chicks then eat all these eggs once these are old enough to lay.... He is a great rooster

I love that about them... 2014 when I got them I had several moccasins around and copper heads... both breeds had many babies.... we saw them several times... I was concerned for my chickens and other pets... the one day I saw them gathered on something then one had it running. .. it was fun to watch.. I don't see many anymore

It's awesome. . I almost bought a Billy to help with the snakes... no need...
I'm definitely keeping them now. My poor cat will just have to keep running. :D

Welcome to the Arkansas Thread. So glad to have you.

Yea, that's why mine don't run loose. I keep them in runs with attached shelter.

Thought I was through with the predator problem, but no. Had them visit again last night and got two of mine, a rooster and a pullet. Traps are being set again.

If they had been going up to roost in the same area for the previous two weeks then disappeared, then something got them, likely a pack of coyotes for that many to disappear at once. I free range mine and they have some protection (LGD) during the day, but they are locked up tight in their coop and pen at night. I rarely lose a bird with my LGD around and I have had her several years. Husband saw a wolf about 2 wks ago though and it ran off when he started yelling at it. It had come up through the woods and the chickens that were penned started going crazy. Husband stepped out of shed and he and the wolf were facing each other across the pen.

Well I figured if something had gotten them there would be feather everywhere or somewhere but I never seen any but I still got my 1 rir she stay near where I'm putting my gardens in at using lots of saw dust and mulch so there is usually alot of worms and what not around those

And dog wise I have a full blooded german shepherd 85lbs last time I wieght her (german bloodline) she is a very good dog but she is more like my child then a dog and I just couldn't leave her out and about when not home we don't live far from a busy road

That's a pretty dog. I understand about the road. Mine seems to think the school bus is a threat. Can't break her of it, but what good will she do if she is tied or penned? No good at all. She's getting old, so she isn't into too much chasing anymore.

Back before I had her, I lost all but a couple of chickens. Not a feather to be seen anywhere. I searched and searched, and finally found a pile of their feathers a couple of hundred yards from the house in the woods. So, a pack of something got them and carried them off. I've seen similar happen with just one chicken. Not a sign anywhere, but after walking the woods would find a couple of wing feathers and small pile of fluff about a hundred yards away. So, whatever was taking them was large enough to kill without a fuss and large enough to eat everything (and I mean everything) with one feeding. Not the MO of a regular dog, because I've seen how they leave things after numerous attacks by them, but most definitely could be coyotes. A bobcat (which we have) and lone wolf would only be able to grab one before the others scatter and hide.
