Arkansas folks speak up.........

We did a little of both. Hubby likes to pond jump. He's tired of catching freshwater and deicied to try a little saltwater fishing. We are both still learning. Its nice to have something new and exciting and different to do. We'll go down there alot this summer.

I took Eva to the vet today. She has been acting very funny the last couple of days and I was afraid she may have been egg bound. Well, she isn't, but she dose have fluid building up in her belly. I was told that was a sign of liver or heart problems and the only thing I could do was to put her back out with the flock and let her go. I can's stand the idea of going out one day and finding my first chicken dead. Im heart broken. I can't believe she's gonna die.

Urban, Try putting her on a pretty strict low fat diet. It could be fatty liver syndrome which would mean she has too much internal fat. No scratch and nothing high energy. I don't KNOW this is the problem and it might make no difference whatsoever, but it might help.

Good luck!!!

How do you do that? They get 16% layer feed and every other day about a cup of scratch between the four of them. Every once in a while they get a slice of bread too. I can't believe how attached I have gotten to a chicken!

*hugs Urban*

It sounds like you're doing well by your girls. Sometimes vets are wrong. Just keep doing what you're doing cause there's nothing wrong with an occasional treat of bread and scratch every other day. She's a happy hen and nothing you're doing is hurting her. Maybe she just has gas and the vet mistook it for fluid. Yep. Just keep your girls happy.

Barred Rocks are not sex linked according to the white spot on their head. They can be used as the hen to make black sex links with the right rooster.

oh.

I guess I was thinking that the stripey chickens were all pretty much sex links and the difference was the colors of their legs and combs.
Tala - stay away from TSC.

Oh Jim I'm sorry about your DOA's! I'm glad you got it handled, but it doesn't make it any easier to find dead in the box. That box looks hardly big enough to hold all of those birds! I LOVE those big old goslings in your box! That one is sticking it's head up so high and looking around. I wish I could have some geese!

I bought all of the black ones that had white spots on their head. There were only 2 or maybe 3 in the whole bin and I got 'em! Based on my googling I think the muddy colored ones might just be EE's but who knows.
Tonight I checked on them after work and 3 of the teeny babies were sitting on the 4x4 "practice roost" pretending to be adult birds! They do seem to have intergrated VERY well. Even righ after I introduced them they were all snuggling together.

Yes ma'm I will stay away, since I bought all the white dots already I think I can resist! LOL

I know I can resist.....I mean, I already have waaaaaaaaay too many chicks!!!!!! *insert angelic smily here*

Sorry to hear about your bird Urban. Do some searching on here, I think someone has a bird that fills up with fluid and they just have to drain her periodically....There's a name for it and it starts with an A I think, but my memory is about as fuzzy as my chicks' butts!

Here is one of the "white heads" I brought "her" in for some playtime after DH left for work! lol I do miss having the babies right next to the computer so I can watch chick tv, but it's just not possible with this tiny house and the new huge dog. lol
