oh dear, w o w, I'm so sorry about that happening, and you must be so glad that your son is home right now. I read the yahoo news obsessively, and after a day like today (6 nato troops killed), I wait and worry, and hope that my husband can figure out to call me and let me know he's okay... I swear, worrying and waiting at home is probably worse than anything else i can imagine. My heart is with his friends and family, and I pray he makes it out of this okay.

eta: My husband finally emailed me. he's fine. I send up prayers for everyone overseas and at home, who is either at risk, or worrying.

One of my daughters is in the Army currently stationed in Afghanistan. She has been there since May and wont return to the states til June 2011. I sent her a BIG box of goodies last month that will last her for a long time. She now wishes she had joined the Navy like I wanted her to, but she made her decision to join the Army instead. I miss her and I worry about her. I myself served 22 years in the Navy during Vietnam, Libya, and the first Gulf War. My dad served 24 years in the Navy during World War ll, Korea and Vietnam. My brother served in the Air Force in the late 70's, early 80's. I have several uncles that served in the military as well from the 40's up til the 80's. One of them was on the Bataan death march in the Pacific during WWll. Another was selected as an astronaut but never went up in space. I guess military service is a family tradition with us.

Dawg I will add your daughter to my prayers. My Navy nephew is going to Africa and Cicily, leaving in November. He will be home on leave from the 20th through the 30th, I can hardly wait to see him!

So far we know he lost at least one finger on one of his hands, he was blinded by the flash but don't how badly his eyes are are damaged. His body armor protected him a lot, he's got other injuries, we just don't know what yet. Thanks for your prayers!

Kate I am so sorry to hear about your friends son. My prayers are with both him and his family. Jasan is home and safe. He was discharged last friday. Hopefully he will get his head back on straight and go into school as he had planned. Right now I cant get him out of his room except for meals and a few minutes here and there. The rest of his unit returns later this month I am hoping seeing them again and knowing they made it back safely will help him settle in alittle better. Unfortunately we have had some issues in the family so it wasnt the best of homecomings for him. I will remind the military familes of this though Make sure your serviceman keeps all his gear together. Everything from his canteen to sleeping bags, clothes etc. They charge you for equipment when you finally get out. THey wanted to charge Jasan $200.00 for a sleeping bag he was issued way back when he first got out of AIT. Luckily mother to the rescue I had it packed away and he was able to return it. He still had to pay for a new canteen as the one he was issued was still wet where he had rinsed it out so they refused to take it back. It amazes me how they can charge our soldiers anything after they have risked there lives for their country. Jasans last bill was 185.00 that they took out of his last paycheck UNcle Sams way of saying Thank you for your service.
