Ascites Draining

Pics
Tubing is much easier than syringing. It's exactly the same procedure putting the tube in as putting the syringe in. The esophagus is an always open chute directly into the crop. Just slide the tube along the right side of the throat as the photo shows in post #42. Then all you need to do is syringe the liquid into the tube. The crop can hold a half a cup, but don't put more than that in. Do it again when you see the crop has emptied.

She has been drinking a lot this morning so I don’t want to stress her out with tube feeding, she’s moving around.
This morning I put her in the dog cage for a little bit so I can monitor her poops and I’m not that happy with them.

Ascites is not curable, remember. Draining merely makes her more comfortable until her liver gives out completely. That she is alive this morning is testimonial to your care. Her poop is not really that important except for showing she is no longer dangerously dehydrated. Keep encouraging her to drink fluids all day today.

Ok, so a little update

She is eating well and moving around fine, I have noticed that the puncture mark from the needle is a mild blue but besides that it has healed

I know I mentioned this but yesterday and today she has been hanging out in the nest box, she has never done it back to back like this, at most she is in the nest box two times in a week. I doubt it but could she start laying eggs again or is she having a reproductive issue?

Besides that she is fine, she is still getting Baytril and my ascites treatment.

It could be my worrying but it does feel like she is filling up again. She has barely opened her mouth during this time though.

Oh, and before I drained her she was constantly having runny, dark, almost black poops and now she is having mostly normal poops! Much easier for me to clean up and she isn't needing a butt bath as often

The blue on the skin is probably a bruise from the needle. I would just take a look once a day at it, it will fade with time.

The nesting box is where she may feel most comfortable for the time being. If she's coming to eat/drink and moving about a little, I would be inclined to let her do her thing and see how it goes.

Sometimes a hen will fill back up with fluid in a short period of time. Hopefully this is not the case, but it can happen.

I do think she is filling back up. I don’t think I will today since she is not panting and I can jiggle her butt around without it being uncomfortable. I am sure it will be very soon though :(

Anyways, since I have experts here, at a farm I volunteer at there are baby quails and one is not walking. She is drinking still. I am not knowledgeable on quails, but I would rather post it here since the quail thread doesn’t look too active. How would you treat a chick that has legs that won’t work. I was thinking splayed legs.

They didn’t have anything there to give him besides rooster booster poultry cell, which it got 4 ml of. And I was able to educate them about the hole where they breath and to go around it :)

What would you do?

Well now I have a bigger problem. I just found this on the inside of eddies wing. Since she flaps around so much to move, could it be a bruise?

Thanks for telling me about the dosing, I might have went a little bit over that😳
But nothing too crazy

I have no idea and I don’t want to guess age or how long it’s legs haven’t been working, but i do know that some of the other babies in the cage have started to lay eggs and if I did have to guess, the quail was probably becoming weaker and it started a few days ago. But today is when it lost leg use. Someone found it laying in the coop on its side and it had blood on its belly. I cleaned it up and there were no wounds.

I just looked it up, quails start to lay eggs at 6 weeks so she is probably 7/8 weeks old
