I'm starting this thread because 1. I'm stuck inside for the next few days due to weather 2. I want to get more people comfortable with showing 3. Article topic ideas!

Ask me any questions you have about showing poultry, waterfowl, and landfowl. I will try my best to answer your questions or point you in the direction of an answer.

HI!!!
I really want to show my hen Dottie next year but don't know where to start...
My first question:
what is the order of showing? Like the whole process? What part of the chicken do you show first?

2nd question:
do you need to know a lot about the breed in general (like the history of the breed?

Thank you!

Hello! Here are some articles I wrote aboutt the show process and getting ready.

You show the whole chicken. All of the chickens go in a cage and the judge will go around and examine each bird in great detail.

You want to learn as much as possible about the breed. I highly recommend purchasing the Standard of Perfection from the APA and the ABA if you have bantams. There are also breed specific clubs that you can join. These clubs focus on one breed and provide tons of learning materials.

That's really cool. My club said that they have copies of the APA available. Does it include pics?
Does the APA talk about each breed recognized?

Yes! The full size version of the APA standard has pictures. The standard goes in depth about every breed that is recognized :)

I'm in NC and I want to show some of my birds eventually. I read up on the NC state fair show regulations and couldn't find much on mixed breeds. I wouldn't even mind not getting an award. I'd just like to show off my birds.

So when it comes to the fair, they usually have a "pet" or "mixed" category. You can enter almost any bird. When it comes to ABA/APA shows, they usually don't have a class for mixed breeds.
