you can save that egg with the crack in it..! i put scotch tape on a egg with a hole in it once, back in the 1970s , it was cracked by a neighbors dog that ate all the other eggs & this one egg was left but damaged after i ran that dog off.! my poor broody was running around the yard screaming her head off, and i ran out of my house & chased that dog off, so this one egg was the only one left but it had a hole in it from the dogs fang tooth , so i quickly put scotch tape over the hole , and put the egg back under my broody & 8 to 10 days later that chick hatched just fine, so its possible...! i would not give up on a cracked egg it just might hatch just fine..!!@Wytchcat Thank you for starting this hatch-along!
I've been MIA for a couple of months (just lots going on in life) but I came on to ask a question about something unrelated to hatching and I couldn't help but check the hatch-alongs. Once I see one, I am totally Hooked!
In "The Silkie House" (I nickname my coops) I have 2 nests going. Mima started on 10 eggs. But, as is their habit, the other hens have no problem climbing in a laying on top of her...so I've lost count by now. Antonia (Mima's daughter) has her nest next door (which is about 6 inches away). She had a very difficult run at her 1st brood in early spring. This time she seems to be doing great!
Both of these ladies started 2 weeks ago today.
In "The Condo" the only silkie in that coop, Zuza, is also on eggs. I discovered today that the reason it seemed those hens had stopped laying (I thought it was the heat) was bcs they've started doing the same...laying eggs into the nest that's occupied. And they have 3 other places they could lay and have laid in recently! Silly chickens.
Zuza is 2 weeks in tomorrow.
So I'll be an early hatcher in August...then I can sit back (hopefully) and enjoy reading everyone else's adventures![]()
Can I join the hatch-a-long if I just started a batch yesterday?? We went full-on crazy with the Sportsman pro 1500 and 1550 set. This is my first time hatching and I find myself greatly relieved the incubator is in the basement, far away-I won't be tempted to meddle! I requested three dozen eggs and ended up with 70. I think. I think there was some questionable fertility so I got extras. No complaints!
(If I started incubating Thursday, is today, Saturday, day 2?) They were shipped from a good distance and not a single broken or cracked egg. Sadly, my "cool lite" ended up being a $2 car headlight in a cheap plastic housing-it is NOT cool, it is burn-yourself hot. So my candling efforts were a little sad. I saw a few partially detached air cells and many I couldn't see at all-I'm hoping that means they are fresh and therefore very small!
Fingers crossed for babies!! Sorry your incu is giving you fits!Cool I will hatch with you.I put mine in last Wednesday so mine will be hatching I believe on September 13th. I have a cheap styrofoam incubator that is having lots of temperature fluctuations. I have to check it several times a day & adjust it. Hopefully I will have a few hatch though! I have hatched before but this is the first time I have hatched eggs from my own chickens (EEs and Orpingtons). What kind are you hatching?
Fingers crossed for babies!! Sorry your incu is giving you fits!
