August Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Omg!!!!!! I wayyyyyyyy prefer the blue and the splash to the black.

Thats exactly how i feel!

I prematurely ran to the September Hatch when I realized I still have one more August hatch left. My Broody Serama. Her 2nd brood of the year. The first one netted me one cockerel who I gave away since all but one female I have is a sibling to him. She should be hatching around August 30th. Some of the eggs under her carry her grandchildren as one of her daughters started laying soon but I still haven't gotten any proof the rooster her granddaughter was with is fertile. She has her own eggs under her too.View attachment 1876959

OOOH, too cute :bow:love

Candled my shipped Polish eggs. I really think I'm getting more impatient as I hatch more chicks rather than more patient. :lau
8 eggs appear to be too scrambled to even start developing, like the detached/saddled air cell egg pictured BUT I'm still feeling pretty hopeful for some of these eggs! I'm seeing development in 7 of the 15 eggs, a couple not as strong as others but we shall see! Also, I decided to start with slightly higher humidity (50%), placed in a horizontal turner, and only left them sitting in the incubator without movement for 24 hours even though most of the eggs have detached air cells and I'm seeing a lot more stability in the air cells than I expected with all of the above. Conducting a lot of experiments on this one!

Come on Polish!!!!!!

I had enough darkness tonight to grab an egg from my broody and candle and we have life! We are ten days in, and she made it through with flying colors of this heat wave. Good girl.

My speckled Sussex has realized what’s going on, and squeezes her legs together until mama takes her daily break and plops her own egg In the nest. I didn’t realize until my broody looked twice as big and really flat and then I picked her up yesterday and found four SS eggs. Today another one. :rant

LOL! Are the Speckled Sussex eggs fertilized? What are you going to do with all of those staggard eggs??? My hens always lay eggs on top of my broody hens too but because I don't have a rooster I just tuck her under my arm at the end of the day and take out the new eggs.

I’m going to eat them.... because they aren’t fertilized. :lau:lau:lau:lau

I don’t have a rooster right now. I have a growing out Delaware I’m going to try with. I actually am not allowed one here and also shouldn’t have NEAR the amount of chickens I do. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I’m way over zealous about cleaning coops and flies, I’m 400+ feet either way from another house, but I’m living on the EDGE. We are moving, but we aren’t even on the market yet. I’m trying to do as much experimenting before I get fined or something so I can know what to properly look for as we move. The majority of my extras are meat birds so I figure I can just say “oh goodness sorry, they’ll be gone soon...” I’m really considering starting a pastured poultry business but I don’t want to jump into anything without experience.

You can do it! Just look at your market a little before hand... it can work well with the right environment. People prefer to buy local, responsibly raised food. Just look into your local food regulations a little and see where you can for in. Getting off my soap box again  sorry!

No I need all the help I can get! I’ve put together a pretty detailed but simple survey I’ve given out to almost everyone I know. I want to make sure i straddle the line well between what I want to produce and what the market wants.

I’ve also been BEYOND amazed at the helpfulness and kindness of my local health department and my state health department. I can sell and do pickup at farmers markets with just my usda processed meat, but I have to have an individual building that can be considered a “store front” on property that can’t house livestock that has a mop sink and a bathroom and they’ll give me a license to sell to the public. I have to have that for any on farm pickups or deliveries.

So far, the local folks have been very encouraging. The only problem is the county Ag officer won’t allow me an agriculture property exemption in the county I want to stay in for pastured poultry. He “only allows Ag exemption for poultry houses for Tyson” and he told me that to my face. :he I said, so if I build a 20,000 square foot building for 100,000 chickens and let a corporation take all my profits you’ll consider tax benefits for farming but if I pasture poultry for the local community you won’t? And he just looked at me. :rant

All I want to do now is raise enough to offset my chicken costs for myself. But I also want to have the property i would need to expand if everything falls into line. :fl

2 12v Deep Cycle marine/RV batteries, an inverter, and a solar panel... if I had enough wire I could rewire the panel onto the barn and maybe not have to lug the batteries back and forth from my trailer. I’m considering a dolly arrangement for this brood, as my back still hasn’t quite forgiven me for the last one!
That’s SO COOL! That’s what I want to do to set up a solar exhaust fan for our coop! I’m having a hard time figuring out how to do it though. Any resources you can recommend?
