August Hatch-A-Long

Pics
End of the Silkie hatch stats:

18 b/s and buff Silkie eggs
9 eggs made it to lock down
5 blue/splash
4 buff
5 chicks hatched-1 later died.
4 b/s
1 buff (r.i.p.) :hit

Ironically, after the recent talk about hatching upright and people’s worries about missing a malpositioned chick’s pip... This set of eggs was laid down as normal, and I had 2 that pipped wrong. Sadly, on the underside of the egg. One died, the other I helped hatch and eventually died. I think, had the eggs been upright, the chick might have had a chance at hatching with access to air.

Nothing from the Seramas yet.

The hatch gave us 4 pretty blues. One is still gooey, but doing okay, I think. A couple of pics of the first two..

And...I ran into this big guy moseying along on our driveway when I left to do errands earlier. :eek:View attachment 1874503

:eek:A bear?! That's the one thing I have yet to run into out here. Bobcats, panthers, coyotes, wild boar, lots of large predators where I live and I know there are bears but I've never seen one, lol.
Your peep is so adorable!!! :love

Sorry did you want me to share?

I candled again on Friday night and removed 3 more early quitters, so I’m down to about 50 eggs in the incubators now. Any thoughts on a good way to keep the chicks sort of separated by breed when hatching for the multi breed group? (Little giant incubators) I’m mostly worried about mixing up the BarnvelderxAmeraucana and the BarnvelderxBarnvelder/Ameraucana chicks. I’d also like to keep my three groups separate OExHyLine, BarnvelderxHyLine, and (LHxCCL)xHyLine. But I can probably manage to tell them apart when they get older based on my observations of my last hatch.

Starting to get excited... I’m going to do a last candle and go into lockdown Tuesday night! I’m going to have to walk a few hours in the dark through the cow infested “big Trees” to get there and back most likely. Nothing like having your black angus bull sneak up on you looking for a snack in the dark! Crazy how quiet they can be when they want to! Should be ok though... we don’t have any large predators on island, (barring cows) and the moon will be almost full.
