August Hatch-A-Long

Pics
Tomorrow is day 21 for the last of our August eggs. 2 Silkies, a Partridge and a Paint. The partridge was rocking and rolling a little bit ago, literally. Turns out it pipped on the underside and was trying to roll over. I watched for a while, went in to have dinner, and it still hadn’t righted itself when I came back out. I upped the humidity and tried to nudge it over, but it ended up face down again and squawking. So, being a bit trigger happy after the bad hatch, I plucked it out to assess the situation. I peeled off one small piece of shell to and it kicked and wiggled, and hatched in my hand before I could get it back into the incubator.:jumpy See what happens when you hatch right side up, little chick!?! LOL. All seems well, and it went right back into the incubator.

The paint pipped earlier today but isn’t doing anything else yet. I’ve really been wanting a Paint. Fingers crossed for all to go well with its hatch. Awesome spots would just be a bonus :lau

So gorgeous!!!!! That partridge is so pretty with the long feathers.

@ScottyGill with the saddle cell that pip is not likely in the bottom, it’s still in the air cell I bet. Looking GOOD!

I have one hatched and walking and one has pipped at the bottom end! It is the one with the saddle cell. The one you said I maybe had to watch. Will this be ok??

Hopefully your little saddle chick has already hatched but you're probably seeing the low pip because if the shape of the air cell and not because it's actually malpositoned. An external pip is great though because you don't need to worry about whether it's getting oxygen! Fingers crossed it hatches without issue! :fl

While guinea moms were off the nest, I candled and found that the other fertile egg set with the one that hatched was DIS. Maybe the nest got too hot??? So, no imminent sibling for our new purple keet. However, one other egg was developing. Problem is, it’s only about 10-14 days along!!! I’ve put it in the incubator. If it hatches, it will be all alone. I’m thinking: a) maybe a guinea will go broody and I can return the egg to the nest. I’ve left 9 dud eggs behind for encouragement... b) I could advertise as a free keet to a good home to try to find someone with similarly aged keet who would like to add another keet.?

Lol, Your guineas keep me as busy as my broody hens do!

Well, the bf is right. Even though my son is grown, I still have that weird Mommy “sense”...but now, with chickens? Woke up out of the blue, went to the barn. Voilà a chick hatching. LOL. The second egg hatched without incident.

Here is the paint Silkie I was so looking forward to..:thYeah, that didn’t go exactly as I pictured it in my head. Oh well, who needs a paint (or splash) Silkie anyway!?!:plbb The little partridge is a really cute little dust mop. Looking forward to seeing it fluffed.

I love the little Partridge!!! It looks like Chewbacca! Congrats on the peeps!

Ok, fading fast here and need to make a decision, hopefully y’all will chime in in time... baby 1 has been out for about 5 hrs and is fully dry but alone, there are 4-5 pips in the incubator with her. I need to turn in for the night and won’t be back down for 9 hours or so. Do I pull her and pop her alone into the brooder tote? Humidity has dropped Back down to 55% I don’t like to pull singles and prefer them to have a snuggle buddy but DH and my ride home has been up since 4;30

I almost always have an early hatches that has to wait for the others to start hatching. They're great for encouraging the others to come out though. It will be just fine. :)

Well there are four out now... two in each incubator, I’m still setting up my grown up chickens and the teens up for the day, as it’s going to be a hot one! I have a small helper until this afternoon, she has hijacked her moms phone and is planted at the incubators, calling me every 5 minutes or so with updates :) the sooner I get done here, the sooner I can get down to the incubators seems a mind boggling concept for her :gig I’ve got one pip I was a little concerned about last night that sounds like it’s been rolled pip down, so I’m a bit worried on that one, but everyone seems to be doing fine. Apparently the first hatchling is pecking at the second out, is that normal? I’ve never had that happen before... but that’s what the kidlet was describing on the tenth call this morning!

Oh it’s a good thing. Brilliant. I definitely know it’s getting oxygen and now i understand it looks longer as it’s doing the internal pip job at the same time. I just hear it and see it rocking.

Isn’t it just the way little chicks explore. They seem to peck everything to work it out. Hope all is well. I can imagine your eagerness to get up and see for yourself
