August Hatch-A-Long!

I also read that you should put shipped eggs upright like in an egg carton and not turn them the first couple of days in the incubator. I didn't learn this until after my shipped eggs already started. That may account for so many not developing and poor air pockets on so many in the beginning, I now have 6 out of 18 in lockdown. I sopped turning on day 16 instead of day 18 which was recommended for shipped eggs. I hope they all hatch, but I don't know.
I didnt know that. I already started turning with the auto turner i made. My whole incubator is home made but i think i have done a great job on it so hopfully my hatch will will hit at least 50 percent.

I worked so hard on the sling lol. And Pretty Special said thank you. She would have typed it herself but its a little hard with her disability.

Your chick has spraddle legs, this is caused when the chicks legs twist out from the hip and will remain in that position unless corrected. To correct it you must brace the legs/hips in the correct position for about a week. Hanging in a sling will not correct the hip position.

Details for proper treatment can be found here: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/02/spraddle-leg-in-baby-chicks-what-is-it.html

A sling is used to treat a slipped tendon or hock joint when the chick needs to not bear weight on the leg...completely different conditions and treatments.

Spraddle leg can only be fixed if proper treatment is started in the first few days. Otherwise the condition may become permenant and the chick could die because it cannot get around sufficiently to eat, drink, and take care of itself.

I am curious about something else. Some of the eggs seem to rattle for a lack of better words. Its as if everything inside is loose. I can feel it when i lightly shake them. Are those eggs non-viable? Or will that even matter? I marked those eggs to test that question to see if any of those will hatch.

I don't know if not turning at the beginning and end will make the difference...I read about it from what seemed like a reliable source. Since it couldn't hurt, I am trying it myself. I wish I had tried not turning in the beginning too so I could have seen if it made a difference in the rate of developing chicks.

Fluctuations in temp is normal when the humidity changes. I find that my temps rise as the humidity lowers, and depending on the temp of the water added, it will go up if its hot water and down if its cold. If I give it an hour or so it balances itself out again.

I know that now, and I've been working really hard to get those legs in place. I've gotten them as good as I can get them for today. Poo little guy is wore out.

i tryed all day and night yesterday (giving several hours inbetween each adjustment. and i was having high temps in the 120's and lows in the 80's
near the light was cooking and the far corner was right at cool... we are revamping to two lights and two fans with the egg racks above the lights and fans instead of beside...also will increse my egg total from 20 to 40+. the eggs i have for hatching are home layed so getting new ones if it takes too long isnt rally a problem. just HOPE i can get this done soon so i dont have that problem lol. (my nest box in the coop now has 15 new eggs in if if all else fails. and a short trip down the road can get me another doz of the other breed..

I would have tried it too had i known. I guess all i can do now is hope for the best.
