just found something amazing! was unplugging and then moving my bator so i could clean and make it ready for the next batch and underneath it i found an egg i had lost and thought one my dogs ate and since it had been out of the bator for 3 days give or take i figured that if there was a chick inside it'd be dead after three day of no heat or humidity to help it hatch...but when i made a small hole in the big end(was just gonna see what color chick i might have gotten if it'd hatched) there was a little yellow chick in there that moved, looked at me and gave a pitiful peep. so amazed at this little chicks will to live...put it into a silicone cupcake/muffin mold with a piece of barely moist paper towel and put it back in the bator and added some water and a towel over top to help the heat go back up and keep the humidity in and hope and pray it will live

Why are my chicks sticking to their eggs?. One was really bad. I did a dry hatch with temp around 102 the whole time. This hasn't happened since my very first hatch last year.

Making my rounds this morning- oh it's been crazy already! First, I was cleaning out their water containers and saw a dead baby in it! It may have drowned but not sure if that was the cod. Do the moms push them aside if they die after hatch? Second, after disposing of the chick and placing water back I turned to walk away and heard a ruckus. I went back in the coop and one of the hens was out but there was a lot of noise coming from her that didn't sound like her. Then I noticed a chick was stuck to her foot feathers. So as she tried to help it off she kept stepping on it. We picked her up and cut the feathers but the baby just layed there, breathing but very weak. I put it back in the nest bc I'm trying not to mess at all w them. That and maybe it's fine and just needs to rest. Ooohhh what a day!

Ok my final hatch for the year is done! The chicks didn't begin to hatch until day 21 plus 10 hours, then finished by day 22 and 12 hours. I hatched one out of two homegrowns. I don't know why the one didn't hatch, eggtopsy showed a fully formed chick in a moist inner sack. It was in the correct position too. Guess it just died. I also hatched 3 out of 18 shipped Silkie eggs. I got one Buff, one Paint, and one I don't know...it was yellow and came from an egg marked Lavender?

They are all doing okay the first morning in the brooder. The Paint Silkie may have a slight spraddle, I will watch it this morning to see if it improves as it learns to walk. If it gets worse I will brace her legs. So far my homegrown is the only one drinking yet, but it was born first, the others are 24 hours or less old so I will give them a little more time to get thirsty.

I will try to get pics later today. It is storming big time here so I have my computer unplugged...using my iPad now and this program makes adding pics from my iPad soooo difficult.

I was turning eggs and smelled a bad one so I looked and it had green ooze on it so I tossed it but there was a live chick in there ! :'( It was the egg next to it that had oozed on it! I'll never toss another one this far along again! (day 17)

Oh that is sad, the poor little chick. I haven't had this situation yet but I have read about it happening to others. I guess in the future you will be double and triple checking to make sure who is doing the oozing.

Lack of sufficient humidity will cause this. The reason that it happens at one time and not another is because humidity changes throughout the year. The chicks need at least 65% humidity during lockdown to prevent them from being shrink wrapped in the inner sack.

Oh my goodness the poor chick! It might have internal injuries from being stepped on by mama. So sorry about the baby drowning. I use a nipple waterer so I never have to deal with a baby drowning in the waterer. The nipple waterers also keep the water cleaner, nobody pooping in the water or flicking bedding in it when they are dust bathing.

Hope your day gets better, not a great way to start the day :/

I unplugged the bator last name night to cool so I can clean it. Came down this morning and one of the egggs I thought for sure was a dud had hatched. Temp was below 80 degrees. Amazing

Oh my...a good example of why waiting several days past the due date before ending the incubation is a good idea. Hope the chick survives despite being so cold and without humidity during hatch.

I didn't open it until day 21 and a few hours. I used a syringe to fill the water but I can't get it to stay over 64% Humidity. The heat keeps going down by 1 degree. So frustrating!!!
I did just open it now and candled some of the eggs. I took one out that I thought looked the worst. I opened the egg and it looked like it stopped maybe around day 15.
It is day 22 1/2 right now.
