August Hatch-A-Long!

Love all the baby peep pictures!

The broodies are on lockdown--three days to go. Try telling that to Maple who jumped off her nest to go scratching around this morning. My boss didn't understand that I *had* to be 10 minutes late because I *had* to make sure she went back into the nest box. There were lives at stake, dang it LOL

There is the first pipper!

WOW! I've been gone for 2 hours and 2 more decided to make their debut. 4/10 hatched as of now and another working hard on it. I've lost track of the ones I was keeping my eye on.... they've rolled around all over the place lol

Sooo....these guys wouldn't cooperate outdoors either! Unless blur or butt is what you're after, lol. So took these as they were going back into the brooder.

Cinnamon (GL Brahma)

Pepper (GL Brahma)

Ginger (GL Brahma)

Sassafras (Cream Legbar, my only July hatch)

Oh my, you should never add chicks from an outside source to your own flock without quarantine for a minimum of 30 days!
I did not add a grown chicken from someones flock to my flock. I added newly hatched chicks to newly hatched chicks. I've read chicks are safe because they are only days old and haven't been around other chickens yet. I looked up if a chick can hatch with a disease. It is very rare. If it does, the disease will still be there in 30 days. That is why hatchery chicks are considered safe. My chicks are on medicated feed as well as the chicks I bought. These chicks will not be added to my flock for 6 weeks.

My chicks are a week old and have not been around any other chickens. I wash my hands before I touch them. His chicks just hatched and haven't been around any others. They were hatched in an incubator. I have a brain and google. I used the two and decided the benefit out weighed the slim possibility that the chicks were ill.

At auctions all kinds of chickens are around each other. At poultry shows, the most expensive chickens are around many other chickens. Each one is picked up by the judges, I don't see them changing there clothes or washing their hands inbetween. Birds come into the yard daily that can have many diseases. I can't keep them all out or stop them for flying overhead and pooping in my yard.

I had 11 chicks hatched in my bator this morning before I left for work, 2 of which were Black Copper Marans (shipped eggs) and I'm holding my breath for the other 6

. The other chicks/eggs in the bator are EE mixes. I have 1 blue and 1 blue wheaten so far, some whites and a 2 gold/reds!
